Bad Voltage episodes

  • 3×22: Phantom Power

Stuart Langridge, Jono Bacon, and Jeremy Garcia present Bad Voltage, in which we take what Jono calls an avant-garde and everyone else calls a ridiculous improvised approach to the set list.

    • [00:01:10] Flash, aaargh. It saved every one of us. [Flash is now dead](https://www.adobe.com/uk/products/flashplayer/end-of-life.html). We take a look back over the history of the web and all the places Flash fitted in, and look at the ups and downs of it all. Glad it’s gone? Yes. Is it replaced? Maaaaybe. We’ll look at Steve Jobs’s Thoughts on Flash memo from 2010, replacements such as Ruffle, and digital preservation projects such as Flashpoint, and ask the questions: are we sorry it’s gone? And what’s next?
    • [00:47:05] And at the end, the news! Scientists have apparently taught spinach to send emails! People in the Bay Area! Get a blue verified badge for your house! The September that never ended had its 10,000th day on January 16th 2021! And now, Bad Voltage!

    • Poetry in Notion

Stuart Langridge, Jono Bacon, and Jeremy Garcia present Bad Voltage, in which Bad Voltage is on Spotify! Also, we have great content, you should review us on Apple Podcasts and elsewhere, and:

      • [00:05:55] We review the Remarkable 2 e-ink writing pad, with reference to our previous show on using paper instead of tech and Alan Pope’s purchase of a Rocketbook. Spoiler alert: Jono likes it. Not a spoiler: Jeremy and Stuart have questions… about whether it’s useful, what it’s useful for, what it’s not useful for… we shall see!

      • 3×20: According To The Prophecy

Stuart Langridge, Jono Bacon, and Jeremy Garcia present Bad Voltage, in which we present our predictions for 2021!

        • Stuart:
          • [00:11:11] Remote work starts to hollow out cities and as a result, three major cities see population drops (or the populations drop more than they already were)
          • [00:17:20] Social media sites band together to avoid fake news (and government regulation of what they do) with some sort of shared “credibility checker”
          • [00:23:25] Amazon buy Zoom
          • [00:25:10] Bonuses: somebody buys Canonical; at least one of us has not been vaccinated; Jono continues to buy Apple stuff
          • Jeremy:
            • [00:31:30] Jeff Bezos will become the richest American who has ever lived (he tops around $340b)
            • [00:33:10] Google will make their largest acquisition in the history of the company
            • [00:37:35] Bitcoin price will go below $5,000 or above $55,000
            • [00:39:45] Facebook will lose 15%-20% of their active user count
            • [00:41:40] Bonuses: Amazon builds a publicly-available general-purpose search engine; a security breach larger than Solarwinds will be discovered and will materially impact the position of a major cloud provider or public tech company
            • Jono:
              • [00:45:55] Sony will release the second version of the PSVR headset
              • [00:49:25] A COVID “vaccine passport” will be required for at least three major airlines and five major countries
              • [00:54:50] Donald Trump’s Twitter account will be disabled at least twice but will not be banned [editor’s note! this has happened once already, in between us recording this show and us releasing it!]
              • [00:56:25] Zoom will start build a complete remote-working offering (the “Sharepointisation” of Zoom, as christened by Jeremy) and acquire at least one major remote-working company
              • [01:01:25] Bonuses: Facebook Spaces will still be shit (even though it has been shut down since 2019, so maybe Facebook Horizon will be shit); Canonical will not get acquired (!)

Stuart Langridge, Jono Bacon, and Jeremy Garcia present Bad Voltage, in which we look back at 2×62, our predictions show from a year ago and see whether we correctly foresaw what happened in 2020, or… not. Also features SHAMELESS grovelling for points.

                • [00:02:07] Stuart on Slack purchases, CCPA convictions, ePrivacy, Epic, and drones
                • [00:22:20] Jono on Salesforce, quantum computing, colour Kindles, Canonical, the PS5, Facebook Spaces (again!) and Jack Dorsey
                • [00:43:10] Jeremy on EA and Blizzard, convergent devices, Uber Eats, and autonomous cars

                • 3×18: Ultracrepidarian

Stuart Langridge, Jono Bacon, and Jeremy Garcia present Bad Voltage, in which we are ultracrepidarian, the Apple phone becomes slightly more annoying, and:

                  • [00:05:45] Lightheartedly, we take a look at metal monoliths around the world, drinking hand sanitizer instead of alcohol, a bunch of parrots were removed from UK family safari park after teaching each other to swear and laughing about it, and how Johnny Rotten was bitten by a flea on the penis after taking in squirrels
                  • [00:17:40] Salesforce acquire Slack for $27.7bn
                  • [00:30:55] CentOS Project shifts focus to CentOS Stream, which at least some people are really unhappy about
                  • [00:40:40] Apple release an ARM chip for next-generation Macs, and also drop $113m to settle the iPhone “batterygate” suit
                  • [01:04:25] Worst-kept secret in tech, that Google are making an OS, is admitted by Google as they open Fuchsia development to the public

Stuart Langridge, Jono Bacon, and Jeremy Garcia present Bad Voltage, in which the reality distortion field is strong in this one, the middle name game continues unsuccessfully, and:

                    • [00:02:03] Jeremy has opted for the Pixel 5! So it’s time for a review. The latest Google phone is out, and we have thoughts on the direction Google’s taking with it. And then… Jeremy’s not the only one with a new phone. Jono’s been shopping too, and maybe a little compare-and-contrast is in order with Mr Bacon’s slightly surprising choice. Let’s see what we decide! Does one cubic centimetre really cure ten gloomy sentiments? Enough to devote the whole show to, at least…

Stuart Langridge, Jono Bacon, and Jeremy Garcia present Bad Voltage, in which the utilities question comes up again, we create spin-off show “Sussing Out Stocks With Stuart”, and:
[00:02:50] Sony allow recording and reporting of private audio chats
[00:09:40] Zoom are refusing events which talk about Zoom censorship
[00:30:00] Quibi crashes and burns having spent billions

                    • 3×15: Interactive Multimedia Communications
Stuart Langridge, Jono Bacon, and Jeremy Garcia present Bad Voltage, in which things are not necessarily jazzed up versions of other things, we wonder what data truly is, and:
[00:00:45] We dive in depth into the notion of “collaborative workspaces”. Coda and Notion both paint themselves as a new kind of document: something which lets you pull in all the information on a topic from all the different sources you use, something you can work on within a team, something over and above a folder of Google docs. They aren’t the first to pursue this dream. Is it a dream worth pursuing? And if it is, are Coda, or Notion, or both doing it right? We’ll go into this in detail, along with some philosophy on the very nature of collaboration itself

Stuart Langridge, Jono Bacon, and Jeremy Garcia present Bad Voltage, in which no news is good news, hardware makes us hard-wary, and:
[00:01:45] The PlayStation 5 and the Xbox. Specifically, can you get a PS5? We can’t (and Sony admitted it), but the graphical things look amazing. They claim to have eliminated loading times with a new super-fast SSD… we’re looking forward to that, but what’s more interesting is that the two consoles seem to have pretty different business models…
[00:26:00] …and in related news: exclusives. Microsoft have just bought Zenimax for $7.5bn, and this won’t be their last acquisition, although at least the Bethesda part of the purchase will apparently run “semi-independently”
[00:41:36] And the final hardware question: are you going to buy a Pixel 5? The announcement of what the Pixel 5 will actually be was after recording time but before release time for this show, inconveniently, but we still have thoughts, and would like to hear yours…

Stuart Langridge, Jono Bacon, and Jeremy Garcia present Bad Voltage, in which the Magna Doodle makes a comeback, Stuart is discontent, and:
[00:04:50] Taco Bell have made their own wine, which we’re sure is delicious… US customs seize a bunch of counterfeit Airpods which turn out to be completely legitimate OnePlus wireless earphones… and Dave Grohl is in a drum battle with Nandi Bushell, a 10-year-old girl from Ipswich, and it is delightful…
[00:13:50] Oracle are buying Tiktok. Or maybe they aren’t. It’s hard to say. Microsoft aren’t. Maybe nobody is. And what’s actually being bought? The US operations? Not the algorithm. Probably.
[00:19:08] Anyway, a more successful deal seems to be that Nvidia are buying ARM for $40 billion. What will this mean?
[00:33:28] Our main discussion: non-tech tech. Jono’s been looking at the Remarkable 2, an e-paper-based note-taking tablet. But should we be just using paper instead? Is everybody already using paper instead? And is this nostalgia, the tech backlash, or none of the above? Are you a pencil or a keyboard person?
