There seems to be an awful lot of sameness out there. If you follow social media, especially LinkedIn, I’ve been seeing more and more Agile advice that encourages people to follow templates. Whether it be for retrospectives, standups, meetings, reports, or what to say to your boss, we’re promoting sameness as a virtue – whether we intend to or not.

I think the big issue with sameness is that it teaches us not to trust our unique voice. As agilists, we solve problems for businesses. We deliver solutions to market in a way that allows us to serve the end customer better. We owe it to them to bring our creativity and originality to that enterprise. When we don’t, our work is seen as a factory where requirements are poured in and what comes out the other side is measured primarily on cost and productivity.

Here’s the thing – we’ve been taught to keep quiet, to know our place, to stay in the development room. We no longer see ourselves (if we ever did) as crucial to business success. And we must. If you expect Agile to survive the next five years, and not be replaced by the latest fad or marketing invention…sameness has got to go.

We can’t wait for someone to save us…our success, and our reputation for being badass practitioners rests with you.

Corporate Agile refers to the diluted practices, unnecessary compromise, and prioritizing uniformity and safety over innovation and impact. Now 25 years old, has the potential to make work better. Yet, as it’s been adopted by massive companies, we’ve seen a slow erosion of its core intent.

What many of us are feeling is that in large companies, genuine Agile ways of thinking and working rarely fit. We see the focus shift to efficiency, dashboard-driven status checks, and a risk-averse culture where the boldness of Agile is stifled.

So why do we keep doing Corporate Agile? The benefits that once justified staying inside these environments—steady pay, benefits, job security—have almost disappeared altogether. Layoffs, stagnant career growth, and a loss of purpose and connection to meaningful work are becoming the norm, not the exception.

Within the Agile community, we’re grappling with the realization that many of the practices and mindsets that once set us apart are now seen as basic “table stakes.” The expertise that used to matter so much is expected everywhere, often in a watered-down form. The market doesn’t value these skills in the same way, and many of us are wrestling with what comes next. Do we keep conforming to systems that don’t value us, or do we find new spaces to apply (and expand) the Agile mindset?

I’m challenging our loyalty to institutions that don’t reciprocate, and asking you to imagine where Agile might bring real impact outside the safe confines of big corporate IT. We can ditch the Corporate Agile, and take our skills and learning into sectors and settings where its spirit can thrive again, and where we as practitioners can rediscover genuine meaning and pride in our work.

Agile careers are shifting. You have to stand out and create meaningful, independent value in a space that’s not as rich with traditional opportunities as it once was. In this episode, I bring on Forge Genesis member Dave Borzillo, a seasoned leader with a background in engineering and decades of experience in software, project management, and aerospace. Acknowledging what’s facing agile professionals today – job scarcity, the limits of typical agile roles, and the need to pivot from simply finding another job or contract – to actually building something of our own.

Most of us are feeling these pressures. It’s no longer just about snagging a coveted Scrum Master job through a recruiter—those gigs aren’t as plentiful, nor as lucrative. So, we’re asking ourselves what comes next? Do we simply adapt our titles, or is there something deeper and more sustainable we can build on our own terms?

Dave’s story will resonate with anyone who has experienced the unpredictability of layoffs or economic downturns, and who wants to take ownership of their skills in a way that no external force can take away. We explore his decision to focus on a specific pain point so many organizations face—running better meetings. As we discuss, most companies struggle with turning meetings into true vehicles for alignment and action, even though many of us in the agile world might see this as basic skill. Dave explains how he carved out a niche for himself by honing and packaging up his unique facilitation approach, which he calls the “Frame, Flow, and Follow-Through” system.

We also reflect on the importance of learning how to actually market and sell this kind of expertise—something most technical folks aren’t naturally trained to do. “Non-conformity” is a loaded word.

Conformity feels safe. It’s comforting to look around, see everyone else doing the same thing, and assume it’s the right path. But comfort rarely leads to success or fulfillment.

Think about the people you genuinely admire—the ones whose careers and lives you’d love to emulate. Chances are, these people aren’t rule followers; they’re true originals. They’re not concerned with fitting in or copying what others do. Instead, they’re focused on creating something new. They innovate, take risks, and never settle for status quo.

Right now, everyone seems fixated on trends. If you’ve scrolled through LinkedIn lately, you’ve probably noticed endless posts featuring AI-generated action figures and avatars. Interesting, entertaining, yes. But if everyone is doing it, its no longer special When everyone is doing the same thing, nobody truly stands out. Following these trends won’t differentiate you; it makes you blend in even more.

Conformity won’t help you secure your future, especially in uncertain economic and political times. The safety promised by following rules is an illusion—because being just another face in the crowd won’t get you noticed, hired, or valued.

Stepping out as an original thinker isn’t easy. When I started the Badass Agile podcast, it was a leap into the unknown. People questioned me, doubted me, and sometimes outright rejected me. Including myself. But that rejection was just the cost of entry to building something uniquely mine, something valuable. Non-conformity required that I learn resilience and courage—qualities that genuinely attract people who are looking for leadership and inspiration.

If you want to be fulfilled, start seeing yourself as someone who creates unique value. It begins with recognizing your own voice and ideas, then having the courage to share them openly. Experiment, make mistakes, and stay committed despite setbacks or criticism. Be ready to walk away from security for the sake of pursuing something genuinely impactful.

Not everyone will embrace this path, and that’s fine. If you’re content with your comfort zone, no judgment. But if the thought of making a distinctive mark excites you, start by documenting your thoughts and ideas daily. Practice sharing your vision courageously and authentically.

Non-conformity is always risky. But in my experience, it’s the best—and perhaps only—way to build a life and career that truly matters.

There’s a call to listen more deeply to our clients and teams, to identify pain points that persist even after Agile has “arrived,” and to find ways to serve that are innovative and unique.

Rather than clinging to the hero story of the past, we see this as an invitation to evolve our practice, deepen our impact, and innovate new forms of value. As uncomfortable as it is, there’s an exciting opportunity here: not to be the hero in the same old way, but to discover the next frontier where leadership, courage, and service are needed most.

Recently, two former students from different Forge cohorts met at an Agile conference. Fulfillment and joy in work don’t come from simply collecting a paycheck. They arise when we see ourselves as creators, deliberately shaping our impact. The most rewarding moments aren’t planned; they’re the unexpected confirmations of the difference we’ve made.

So ask yourself today: What ripples am I creating? What unique experience, idea, or innovation will I offer the world? Remember, you’re not just here to do a job—you’re here to create a meaningful legacy.

Imagine creating agile solutions for healthcare, arts, or even auto racing—whatever sparks your joy and fulfills your purpose.

But here’s the catch: these entrepreneurial skills aren’t widespread. Many talented people struggle with defining their market, engaging customers authentically, or leveraging social media effectively. This is precisely why programs like the Forge Genesis have become increasingly valuable. Agile has devolved from a dynamic framework into a rule-bound guidebook that often prioritizes pleasing corporate structures over innovation. This “employee mindset”, and its focus on maintaining the status quo stifles innovation – and speed.

I challenge you to embrace an agile spirit that favors experimentation, flexibility, and a willingness to break free from rigid frameworks. The conversation also addresses the need to help Agile teams focus on value creation and client impact – instead of adhering strictly to prescribed processes. I invite everyone to rethink their approach to Agile and to prioritize outcomes and impact over traditional rule-following.
