What does the journey of obtaining a visa and green card to stay in the US look like, when it's spread out over 13 years? MD Ma is our final guest in our series centering the voices of international students and visa workers, and he first shares how he chose to come to the US - the aspiration to be a part of Hollywood as well as the freedoms a gay man could experience - and his journey through higher education, where he similarly realized the restrictions placed upon international students. But he also sheds light on the tribulations that he experienced while navigating the workplace, whether it was garnering support from leadership to kickstart his green card process or carefully deciding where his next job should be. All the while, MD acknowledges the privilege he has, and he holds so much empathy for companies and businesses that are doing their best to support the workers who hope to maintain their life in the US.

We hope that through the stories by MD, Na He, John, and Dahee, you've learned a little bit more about the lived experiences of immigrants who pursue the American dream.

More about MD
Born in China, raised in the UK, China, and Singapore, I have always enjoyed learning stories of others who own different pieces of the world I will never see. I have taken many personality tests and they all came back with a similar outcome, telling me that I’m a big “giver”, which is totally on point, given I always think about how I could amplify my limited time and energy to help as many people out there as possible. I did consulting, sold tactical pants, and now work in the fertility business to change the world, one family at a time. But I know I still need to continue the journey inward, and find out what I ultimately want to do for the rest of my life. You see - I’m still a work-in-progress human - probably just like you.

Getting into Harvard School of Dental Medicine is difficult for ANYONE, but imagine getting in:

• immediately after undergrad,
• as an international student, 
• who had to take her senior spring courses in the middle of the night due to a global pandemic.

Dahee shares her motivation for pursuing her undergraduate and graduate education in the US and the challenges she had to overcome at every step of her journey. Tune in to celebrate her resilience and wish her luck for a semester of taking dental school classes remotely! 

More about Dahee

Dahee is a South Korean international student at Harvard School of Dental Medicine. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering, Biomedical Computation from Stanford University in June 2020. During her time at the undergraduate institution, Dahee was a president of Stanford Undergraduate Research Association and worked as an undergraduate researcher at Joy Wu Lab. As she loves to travel internationally, she participated in Bing Overseas Seminar Program, visiting Germany, Austria and Switzerland and also did a summer internship at INSERM, Paris. Furthermore, Dahee volunteered at Stanford Health Advocacy and Research in the Emergency Department Program to connect patients to appropriate community resources by understanding the social determinants of health. 

She recently joined the organization “F1 doctors” which helps mentor international pre-meds and pre-dentals. Its mission is to provide a network of international medical students, dental students, residents, and attendings for mentorship and guidance as pre-dentals and pre-meds apply to programs . 

In her free time, she was part of Stanford K-pop Dance Organization and Sigma Psi Zeta Sorority.

June 2020: Trump issued a proclamation suspending entry of non-US citizen workers to the US. July 2020: ICE issued a rule that students who are not permanent residents must leave the US if all of their courses are taught remotely. These are just 2 examples of how policy changes and government actions heavily impact our peers who have immigrated to the US. None of us are strangers to the American Dream, but is it worth the tribulations and burdens? We invited Na He and John to share with us their personal challenges of navigating the immigration system as students and visa workers, giving us important social context of the Korean society's perception of an American education, all the while questioning the value of the US education and the American dream.

Na He was born in Seoul, South Korea. She spent her childhood and half of her pre-college schooling in South Korea, and the other half in America (Florida and Virginia). She received her B.S. and M.S. in Computer Science from Stanford University (and a minor in Art Practice). Currently, she’s working for Gusto in California as a software engineer.

💬 Debate time! While we cover a variety of topics on this podcast, we as the co-hosts tend to align pretty similarly on a lot of these topics. So in this episode, we intentionally picked difficult and controversial topics that we either disagree on, or that we have unresolved thoughts on. We each invited a friend of ours onto the episode, Erica and Sarah, to fan the fire🔥 that is this debate. The 2 questions we discuss are:

1. Should individuals and / or companies provide disclaimers when they heavily edit the appearance of someone in the ad? What should disclaimers look like? (8:30)

“2 months into dating, and he’s already cheating on me on my birthday weekend?!” Mark and Julie met during college and have been in a committed relationship for 3 years. In this episode, they graciously share both sides of the mild, medium, and spicy conflicts that they’ve worked through and continue to work through together. Mark is a 1.5-generation Chinese American who does not come from a Christian family, and Julie is a 1.5-generation Korean American and only child who comes from a Christian family. We discuss how family, culture, and religion shape both our expectations about romantic relationships and our skills in navigating conflicts. Have you been told a narrative that whatever career you begin full-time sets the trajectory for the rest of your life? We're really aiming to show you all that that does not have to be the case, and our guests are living proof that you can have full control over your career. In this episode, Christina Gee (fun fact: Sophia met Christina through Subtle Asian Dating!) shares her story of exploring many entrepreneurial roles within the tech industry: from being a product marketing manager intern at Microsoft, to becoming a business intelligence analyst and then a product manager on Windows, to now being a product manager at the startup Affirm. Even within the tech industry, Christina has held 3 different roles in the few years she's been out of school, so she sheds light on her experience as a student at an entrepreneurial school like Babson College, what she's learned from each role, what prompted her to continue to explore more opportunities, and how to not lose faith that there is always a way to get your foot through the door, even if you don't go to a tech-centric school or immediately look like the perfect candidate on resume.
