You may remember Leena as the medical student from UCSF who chatted with us at the beginning of the pandemic about the racial implications of COVID-19 and the rhetoric used by prominent figures in the US, especially in the Asian American community. Leena joins us again to share some of her observations and experiences working in the hospital during a COVID era, and how this time period is shaping what questions and values she hopes to lead by as a future healthcare worker. Last time, we got to immerse ourselves in the joy of sharing our love for particular shows that make us reflective and introspective. This time, we share the joy in some of the most intimate moments in our friendships. We don't share the same friend groups, but we can share the lessons that we're gleaning from moments of acknowledgement, reconciliation, admiration, and connection that we experienced in the year 2020 that is somehow passing by nonchalantly with a sprinkle of anxiety and chaos.

In the anxiety and chaos of 2020, we’re going to share what has given us a sense of wonder, wonder that leads to JOY, JOY that can be contagious. More about Leana Ahmed:
Leana Ahmed currently works in the Data Analytics & Insights Technology division of Consumer Small Business & Wealth Technology. She is the Risk & Governance execution lead for a suite of applications within that space. She works with application managers and the many compliance programs across the enterprise ensuring that the portfolio aligns with the Bank’s risk and governance objectives for application management. 

Leana’s passion for diversity and inclusion was ignited at a very young age by observing her parents work towards these goals while growing up in Houston, Texas. As a teenager, she began working with her parents and community groups towards the acceptance of all. This passion drove her to co-chair Bank of America’s internal employee resource group North Texas chapter of ALN (Asian Leadership Network) in 2012. After moving to Southern California, she revamped the San Diego subchapter in 2014 for the Southern California chapter. 

In her spare time, Leana volunteers with a number of charities in Southern California. She partakes in cultural activities throughout the region via her lifelong study of Indian Classical and Middle Eastern dance. She was on the board of Ogrojatra in San Diego County, a non-profit dedicated to Bengali people and culture.

How can you most effectively showcase your experiences and expertise in an interview, especially in a video call? More specifically, how can you most effectively showcase your self-awareness, communication skills, and ability to connect over non-medical topics during a medical school interview? 

Karen Hou Chung, a 4th year medical student at the University of Washington School of Medicine, shares the tips that she learned as an admissions interviewer and that she is applying in her residency interviews. 

A tip that Karen shares again and again is to take GAP YEARS! Nervous about telling your loved ones that you'd like to take a gap year, and even more nervous about spending it doing something "unrelated to medicine"? After hearing Karen describe memorable interviewees' unconventional paths to medicine, you'll likely feel encouraged to commit to one (or more!) gap years.

When you find an opportunity you're excited to apply for, do you ever open up the app, see that you have to write a personal statement, and immediately feel dread because "how in the world can I showcase myself with just a few words? What are they even looking for?" We've been there: in our college applications, cover letters and interviews with companies, and applications are never going away. We've chatted about the college application process before in eps 3, 4, and 21, but this time we wanted to take a look at applications from the angle of storytelling.

Betty Bu, a former Your Next Date guest (#ifixbrokenhearts, IYKYK), shares with us her experience as a college admissions counselor at Northwestern University:

• what people commonly ask her about Northwestern
• what applications have stood out to her
• how it's informed her own experiences applying as she considers PhD programs

With Betty, we got to revisit some of the stories we were told about college applications and see if they still hold true as we've gone through our college experience and more various application processes, as well as any advice we could give to folks who aren't sure how to answer the question "tell me about yourself."
