For the Tune of the Week 4/12/13. This is #801 on the Slippery Hill website by Earl Thomas, Jr. of Kentucky.

Ed Britt and I recorded this in my living room back in January, 2009. I had just worked this up after listening to a fine version by West Virginia fiddler Jack Krack. Ed is playing clawhammer stytle on his Ome, in double C tuning, capoed on the 2nd fret, I'm three-finger picking on my semi-fretless Vega Tubaphone, in open D tuning.

These two pieces go together, both in chordal flavor and lyrical themes.

I like Doc Watson's version. Mine's clawhammered.

Coal Creek, Virginia fiddler Roscoe Parish (1897 - 1984) was visited and recorded in the 80's by Andy Cahan and Alice Gerrard. I found this tune in the Milliner-Koken American Fiddle Tunes Book and an MP3 of Alice performing it. Its melody is like a music box! As I'm researching Roscoe Parish right now; it's given me more insight into his music. This tune is related to Flying Indian and O Lassie, Art Thou Sleeping Yet?, indicating it has deep roots.
