Here's my take on this classic from the fiddling of Henry Reed. I'm playing it in the key of G (G modal tuning) on my Lee Tubaphone, and accompanying myself with a guitar.

Learned from Luther Strong in the Library of Congress. This tune was claimed to have earned him $500 in fiddle contest wins. Reading about him in Stephen Wade's book The Beautiful Music Around Us reveals much about Mr. Strong's life and music.

My 'version' of JBD - not quite the classic tune, but close in feel I think. Note this is the audio version of a previously uploaded video.

An original composition named after the Hangout's own Paul Roberts. He once posted an inspiring story about having young students take instruments and go off on their own to try to make music with them (as opposed to starting by having them learn the "right" way to do it). I sympathize with this approach and was moved by the story.

I can't honestly claim to compose these tunes about a topic, but I can at least name them in honor of things that seem fitting. So this one is named "Hats" in honor of Paul (he has awesome hats).

Recorded on a Fielding custom made Whyte Laydie tone ringed banjo, tuned something like open D.

Simple rendition of an old favorite serving as a demo of the "baritone" banjo, a low-tuned instrument (fretted) built for me by Jason Mogi (tuned dADF#a).

The similarity of these tunes' beginnings inspired me to combine them as a medley.

For the TOTW, Feb. 8, 2013. An emotionally moving modal tune.

This tune comes from fiddler Harvey "Pappy" Taylor (1894-1987), of Effingham, Illinois, collected by the late Gary Harrison. I made this practice tape in 2011, playing my 1964 Ode Model 42, in a G variant tuning (gDGAD), capoed on the 2nd fret.
