Welcome to the podcast. In the 1990s, it seemed that the goddess movement was everywhere, both in popular and scholarly press. Since then, the fervor has cooled, however the myth of a unified, peace-loving goddess religion of Old Europe has persisted, especially in popular consciousness. An early proponent of this myth was UCLA archaeologist Marija Gimbutas. Today, we’re exploring her book, The Language of the Goddess. The book is intended to be a grammar of prehistoric symbols, however Gimbutas goes beyond that purpose to make a controversial claim about Goddess religion and society. We’ll look at what makes the book valuable, where its archaeological scholarship give way to ideology, and why its vision of religion, human migration, and an ‘authentic European heritage’ still invites debate.
