Kazakhstan: The Trip We Barely Remember (But Somehow Loved Anyway)
Some trips leave an unforgettable mark on your soul. Others? You mostly remember fragments, questionable tour guides, and the fact that you had a really good laugh.
In this episode of Bantering Across Borders, we look back on our whirlwind trip to Almaty, taken in 2018 and revisited through the foggy lens of memory in December 2025. Despite spending much of this episode trying to piece together what actually happened, one thing is clear: we had a surprisingly brilliant time.
We reflect on our short adventure through Kazakhstan, including visits to the ancient petroglyphs at Tamgaly, the stunning scenery around Big Almaty Lake, and exploring Almaty itself.
Along the way, we discuss why this particular trip has become oddly blurry in our memories and compare Kazakhstan to the other “Stans” we’ve visited.
Despite the patchy recollections, one thing shines through: travel isn’t always about perfect itineraries or unforgettable landmarks — sometimes it’s simply about the people you experience it with.
As always, expect honesty, laughter, travel mishaps and a healthy amount of banter.
In this episode:
00:00 – Coming up
01:37 – Introduction to the series and episode
02:27 – Heading off to Almaty, Kazakhstan
04:05 – Lasting impressions: what do we actually remember?
06:00 – A quick introduction to Kazakhstan
10:25 – Touring Kazakhstan Day 1: the petroglyphs at Tamgaly Petroglyphs

28:20 – The friendship question
31:39 – Wrapping up Kazakhstan
32:31 – Uncovering Sarah’s quirks
34:00 – Next episode preview
A note on timing: This episode reflects on a trip taken in 2018, recorded as part of our retrospective travel conversations in December 2025. Some details may be hazy (on our part!), but the memories — however fuzzy — still make for a good story.
Follow Bantering Across Borders for funny, honest travel stories from two British expats exploring the world — often venturing beyond the obvious tourist trail, occasionally with questionable guides and unreliable memories.

What happens when a trip changes not just how you see the world — but how you see yourself?
In the first episode of Series 3, we reflect on a journey we took through Palestine in December 2018 — a trip to the Holy Land that became something far more profound than either of us expected. Now, in December 2025, we look back on that experience and explore how it changed our perspectives, challenged our assumptions, and continues to stay with us years later.
From the stark realities of life in Hebron to the spiritual intensity of Bethlehem and Jerusalem, we revisit the moments that left the deepest impact — emotionally, culturally and spiritually.
We talk candidly about what it was really like travelling through Palestine as tourists, witnessing everyday Palestinian life, and experiencing places of huge historical and spiritual significance — including walking the Via Dolorosa and visiting the traditional site of Jesus’ birth at the Church of the Nativity.
More than a travel story, this episode explores how travel can reshape the way we see the world — and ourselves. As always, expect honesty, humour, unexpected moments, and plenty of banter along the way.
In this episode:
00:00 – Coming up
00:57 – Introduction to the new series
02:10 – Palestine: Why did we decide to visit the Holy Land?
05:05 – An overview of Palestine
06:56 – Getting there: travelling to Palestine in 2018
09:57 – Visiting Hebron and witnessing everyday Palestinian life
21:35 – Exploring Bethlehem and the traditional birthplace of Jesus
32:00 – Visiting Jerusalem, walking the Via Dolorosa, and experiencing the Holy City
41:22 – Onwards to Jordan
43:40 – How did this trip change us? Reflections on worldview, faith and spirituality
48:15 – Next episode preview
A note on timing: This episode reflects on a trip taken in December 2018, recorded as part of our retrospective conversations in December 2025. The places, practicalities and political context may have changed since our visit, but the impact of the experience remains.

In the final episode of Series 2, we head to one of the most surprising, humbling, and fascinating destinations we've ever visited: Iraqi Kurdistan.
Growing up during the Gulf War, “Iraq” was a word that came wrapped in fear and conflict on the news, so stepping foot there as two middle-aged expats armed with just a couple of curious minds, felt surreal. And magical. And completely unexpected.
Join us as we wander through ancient monasteries, share dinners with locals, and walk barefoot through the sacred Yazidi village of Lalish — one of the most moving travel experiences we've ever had. We also climb up to the atmospheric Citadel of Erbil, reflect on the kindness of everyone we met, and marvel at how different reality is from the headlines we grew up hearing.
Stay with us till the end as answer our season-ending question: What do we wish for each other as life takes us on different paths?
This is an episode about challenging assumptions, embracing curiosity, and discovering the humanity and beauty of a place too often misunderstood.
