“There’s a digital war that’s taking place,” says Walt Czerminski, CEO at Cytellix, “… and it escalates every year. And the number of successful exploits is growing.” According to Czerminski, the way to gear up for this war is basic hygiene, which he feels is like basic training for combat. In this podcast, we continue our series on cybersecurity, and what can be done to prevent and prepare for attacks. We discuss first step that any household or organization can do such as better password management, two factor authentication, password rotation and other habits. This is part of a larger framework. We also discuss achieving maturity, or compliance.

“Checking the box isn’t really the best place to be,” adds Czerminski. We learn that there are a set of choices to achieve maturity, within the larger context of creating readiness. Part of that picture includes preparation for what happens on the day after a security fail, which includes frequent backups, where we literally count the days of business loss. Stress testing is also discussed, which we learn is like war games, playing out scenarios that develop “muscle memory” and to recover better and faster. “Cyber actors are always looking for the easy button… they’ll look for the weaker parts of the supply chain.” The Cytellix approach to helping companies figure out and harden these weak spots, is outlined.
