  • Episode 199: Baby, We’re on Board

Hello and welcome to this week in geek. This week we get to review one of worst named movies of the summer, Baby Driver and we have our spoiler free review and a spoiler filled review at the end of our podcast where we tell you what we really thought. Okay, the title of this week’s show kind of gives it away, but we will tell you what we liked about it. We also review this week’s streaming review of Sully, talk over the SNES Classic and some free shit good shit. Also we have your answers from last week’s podquestion of what your favorite E3 reveal was.

This week’s recommendation was Sully on HBOgo. Full disclosure, I didn’t remember this incident so it took me all the way till the end for me to get that it was based upon a true story. Besides that, we both agreed that this movie felt really short, but this was mainly due to lack of movement. The movie takes almost entirely during the the investigation of the crash, with a few flash backs to the flight itself. While we really do like Tom Hanks we can both agree that this isn’t his best movie. He does a fine job acting, it’s just that the movie itself really isn’t all that entertaining. It was okay to watch the first time but we both would be hard pressed to recommend anyone else going out of their way to watch it.

For our next week’s recommendation we’re watching Creed on HBOgo. While I’ve never seen any of the Rocky movies I am super excited to see this movie one.

You can suggest a streaming movie that you want us to watch and review on future episodes that are on Hulu, Netflix, Amazon Prime or HBOgo.

  • Episode 198: Bayformers 5

Hello and welcome to this week in geek. Bat and I lived up to our word and we both sat through the new Transformers movie, The Last Knight, and we survived with stories to tell. As per the usual we bring you both our spoiler free review a spoiler filled review at the end of our podcast. We also review this week’s streaming review of The Accountant and finally dive right into all of the E3 news and talk about what we’re really excited for in the next year or two. Also we have your answers from last week’s podquestion of which Universal Monster Movie do you want to see next in the Dark Universe.

This week’s recommendation was The Accountant on HBOgo. We heard a lot about Affleck’s movie when it first came out of seemingly no where. We both really enjoyed this Wick-esque romp but did get lost in the intrigue of the main plot with the Medical company. Solid acting, good action and (besides the ‘main’ plot) a simple and easy to follow story makes this a worthwhile time investment. We both gave this a thumbs up and would say it was worth the watch.

For our next week’s recommendation we’re watching Sully on HBOgo. We love most anything Tom Hanks so we’re both ready for a good movie.

You can suggest a streaming movie that you want us to watch and review on future episodes that are on Hulu, Netflix, Amazon Prime or HBOgo.

  • Episode 197: Summer Movie Preview PCC 2017 Panel

Hello and welcome to this mid-week in geek. This last month Bat and I hosted a few panels at Phoenix Comic Con. This panel you are about to listen to is our Summer Movie Preview. During this panel we talked about the movies that were about to come out (before we had seen Wonder Woman and the Mummy) and had a lot of audience participation. We also kind of got distracted by Split and talking about how damned amazing that movie was, because we had just watched it. A little forewarning, the audio isn’t the best and we didn’t do a good job of repeating the questions and answers from the audience so it is a little rough. That said we still wanted to make sure our annual episode celebrating our favorite time of year went unheard.

Thanks again for all that attended our panels and we look forward to hosting more in the near future… though we will be working on other ways to get some better audio quality.

Without further aduie, here is our panel from PCC 2017!

  • Episode 196: The Mum-meh

Hello and welcome to this week in geek. Bat and I both got in the theaters to see this week’s theatrical review of The Mummy and Bat was able to grab a showing of It Comes At Night. We bring you our spoiler free reviews of both movies and a spoiler filled review of the Mummy at the end of our podcast. We also review this week’s streaming review of War Dogs and talk about the new Xbox X (silly name), prepare ourselves for next week’s E3 coverage, hear Bat’s ass destroy a chair (see pictures on our blog), The Black Panther and Absolutely Everything trailers and make a Smirnoff Ice bet about the opening weekend box office returns for Valerian and Dunkirk (see more below). Also, we did not forget this time, we have your answers from last week’s podquestion of what is your favorite movie snack.

Every now and then we make a Smirnoff Ice bet… and it looks like we have one soon! The rules are simple, if Bat wins then I chug a Smirnoff Ice on bended knee for all of the internet to see. If I win then he does. If you can’t tell, we’re not particularly fond of these things so it’s a punishment. The bets are set and we will soon get to see the winner.

*Bat’s Bet: Dunkirk will make 30 million more than Valerian on opening weekend.

*Hammer’s Bet: The spread will be less than 30 million (I’m no fool, Dunkirk is going to make more… I just don’t think it will be THAT much more)

This week’s recommendation was War Dogs. The movie itself is pretty standard affair. You can guess the quick rise and the bad fall that these characters take as they get into the cut throat world of gun running. There isn’t much more beyond what you see in the trailer, but that doesn’t make it a bad movie. We both liked it well enough, it’s not a stand out but it was fun for what it was. More than anything, we want to know how much of this is blown out of proportion for the sake of movie magic. Bat particularly likes Miles Teller, so any chance he can see him acting he is happy to give a shot. We both would say it’s a fun watch but not something to go out of your way to see.

This week’s recommendation was my choice so we’re watching The Accountant on HBOgo.

  • Episode 195: A Wonderful PCC Recap

Hello and welcome back and we have some stories to tell! Which you may have guessed from this episodes length. This last week was Phoenix Comic Con and we have our full coverage and reactions from both Bat and myself. We had 3 successful panels, thank you to all that attended, and we also got to see two movies. One that lived up to it’s titled and one that sunk at the box office. We are only going to be giving a spoiler free of Baywatch but we will be giving Wonder Woman a spoiler free and spoiler filled review (spoilers at the end of the show). We also are going to gush about Split and wrap everything up with some free shit good shit and our podquestion of… wait, no we didn’t. Sorry all we got so wrapped up in recapping the past two weeks that we got a distracted and forgot. But next week we won’t!

This week’s recommendation of Split was mine, but really Bat and I couldn’t hold off waiting for streaming to see this one. Which, I can tell you now, was no mistake. This movie is simply fantastic, though the main reason we say so is because of James McAvoy’s acting. We were floored by his performances as each of the personalities living in the antagonist’s mind. Watching him shift between characters so seamlessly was simply a treat to witness. The story was enjoyable to, it had many of the familiar thriller tones that we used to expect from Shyamalan. While this doesn’t get the director back into his previous esteem, it does finally pull him out of his detention corner in our opinion. The connections to Unbreakable (one of our absolute favorites) seemed added late in the game but was still a nice treat. We both highly recommend you giving this one a chance and watch it as soon as you can.

This week’s recommendation of War Dogs comes from Bat. This movie seemingly popped in and out of the theater with little to no fanfare but the trailer grabbed us. You can watch along as we stream this week’s movie through HBOgo.

  • Episode 194: The Truth Is Out There… That Alien Covenant Isn’t Good

Hello and welcome back! While we took a week off the news started to really stack up! We have a whole mess of Nerd News in addition to our theatrical review of Alien Covenant and our streaming review of Now You See Me 2. We also now are in the final count down to Phoenix Comic Con! Damn, I can’t tell you how excited we are! So many things to see and people to talk with. It’s one of my favorite times of the year! But for now let’s get onto the podcast as well as our Podquestion of what is your favorite Star Trek TV show theme?

This week’s recommendation of Now You See Me 2 was from Bat. While we both adored the first movie, we were sadly disappointed with this second foray into NYSM’s world. Some of our biggest complaints were in the form of flat character development. Normally in a sequal you would look to further evolve your characters that you set up in the first movie. But this one seems to just keep the status quo and only really allows Lizzy Caplan’s character to find some growth. But that’s probably because she’s the only real new one to the team. Also, we just couldn’t get past the zany character of Woody Harrelson’s “brother.” He just felt really phoned in and very distracting. The movie isn’t a total loss as you’re still treated to some really fun spectacles in the form of their magic tricks. But I would still argue that alone is not worth the price of admission. If you loved the first one we both recommend you pretend like this one didn’t exist and enjoy the first one again instead. Bat and I both gave this one 2/5.

This week’s recommendation of Split is all me baby! Well, to be honest, we both have been craving to see this one and just couldn’t wait till it came to streaming. So instead we’re doing the rare thing and renting this one instead. Here’s to hoping this one lives up to the hype!

  • Episode 193: The Guardians of Fleetwood Mac

Hello and welcome back! Guess what? It’s the (Bat and Hammer) official start to Summer Movie Season! This week we bring you our Spoiler free and Spoiler filled review of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 as well as our streaming review of the Legend of Tarzan. We also have a few trailers to discuss before wrapping up with our Podquestion of what popular gaming series have you fallen out of love, yet want to fall back in love with?

This week’s recommendation of Legend of Tarzan was my choice. Right off of the bat Bat did not like this one and said he found it boring over all. His only thing he really liked was the fact that Tarzan always kept his hands in an ape like knuckle… yup that was his only thing he liked about this. I on the other hand had a pretty good time with this retelling of a later in his life Tarzan. While far from perfect it was an entertaining tale. The villain motivations were either too convoluted (Christoph Waltz’s character) or too simple (Djimon Hounsou’s character ). While I wouldn’t give it a second watch I would say it was fun if you have any love at all for the character. Bat would tell you to avoid it at all costs.

This week’s recommendation of Now You See Me 2 comes from BAt. We both liked the first one but are unsure how they’re going to do with the parting of ways with Isla Fisher. You can watch this one with us on HBOgo.

  • Episode 192: Inside Helmet Jokes

Hello and welcome back! It’s another illustrious “slow news week.” We stayed out of the theater again this week but instead watched out streaming review of Backcountry. We also talk a little about Call of Duty WWII and a Unbreakable sequel. We wrap everything up with some free shit good shit and our answers to last week’s Podquestion of what actor did you feel was underused or wasted in a Marvel Cinematic Universe.

This week’s fan recommendation, from Kristi, was the hiking horror movie Backcountry. We went into this movie with no expectations and were relatively surprised. Although this movie is not great, it was pretty decent. We liked how it just jumped right into the story unlike, as Bat pointed out, The Forest. I also really found the Bear scene to be particularly impacting… like wow, I felt uncomfortable. Our biggest gripes were the “stupid” mistakes that had to be made for the movie to happen that we felt cheapened the movie. Bat also kind of wanted a subplot involving the Trailman. Overall we both gave it a thumbs up and thought it was an entertaining watch.

This week’s recommendation of Legend of Tarzan is my choice. We missed this one in the theaters and we’re about to find out if that was a good or bad thing. Here’s to hoping that we’ll go ape for this one… nope, I’m not sorry for that one. You can watch this one with us on HBOgo.

  • Episode 191: Asgardians of the Galaxy

Hello and welcome back! And this week we actually have some news for you all! But first we give you our streaming review of The BFG. Once that Giant has fallen we then get to dive head long into the week of Disney. It all begins with the first trailer for Thor Ragnarok and follows with the first trailers for Star Wars the Last Jedi and Battlefront 2. Lastly we wrap everything up with answers from this week’s Podquestion of what TV show should Hammer watch next.

This week’s recommendation was The BFG on Netflix. While I fondly remember the book, Bat had never even heard of it. But with the Nostalgia aside we took a leap and sat down for a rather mediocre ride. You wouldn’t have guessed this was a Steven Spielberg movie if you hadn’t seen his name on the trailer. While we both enjoyed the Giants we really couldn’t invest ourselves into the human characters. Over all Bat felt bored and I felt a little let down. It’s not a terrible movie but it also isn’t a good one. We both gave this a thumbs down with 2/5 for Bat and a 3/5 for me.

This week’s recommendation is from one of our dear listeners. Kristi wants us to watch Backcountry. While we had no clue what it is we know that she hasn’t steered us wrong yet. I took a peak at the trailer and have a feeling this one is going to make me jump. Feel free to watch this one with us on Netflix.

  • Episode 190: Almost There

Hello and welcome back! For this week’s show we bring you … not a lot. Seriously it’s been a slow week. So we talk about our surprisingly not bad streaming review of Rachet and Clank and dig into what we look for in the next iterations of consoles. Lastly we wrap everything up with answers from this week’s Podquestion of what anime you wanted to see made into a live action movie.

For this week’s recommendation Bat had us watch Ratchet and Clank on Netflix. We both kept hearing a lot of backlash regarding how bad this movie was. But after seeing it ourselves we’re not sure what they’re talking about. This movie really captured the spirit of the characters from the game and gave a fun and fleshed out world for our heroes to explore. It was cheesy and silly but over all it was entertaining and had some heart to it. Graphically speaking it may not be the most impressive out there but it doesn’t disappoint either. We both gave it a solid 3/5 and recommend giving it a watch, especially with your young ones.

This week’s recommendation is my choice and I’m having us watch The BFG on Netflix. This one snuck in and out of theaters and we’re going to find out why. Well, maybe we will.

You can suggest a streaming movie that you want us to watch and review on future episodes that are on Hulu, Netflix, Amazon Prime or HBOgo.
