  • Episode 169: Late Night Editing is the Worst

Hello and a welcome back to your regularly scheduled week in geek. Sorry but going to keep this short and honest, it’s a bit late and I’m tired. Don’t push off editing till the last minute, it never ends well. But you know what ends well? This podcast, okay we do skew quite a bit into real world stuff but before that we have plenty of bullshittery. No theatrical review this week but we do have our Third Halloween movie review with Knock Knock as well as some geeky nerd news.

Our third streaming Horror movie of Knock Knock. was my choice. And wow was it a bit of a strange ride. Full disclosure, Bat was unable to finish this review due to us forgetting the EpixHD app is crap. I did finish it, thank you PC. The first 1/3 of the movie starts off like a bad porno (especially Keanu’s acting) and then the last 2/3 of the movie is all about mental and physical torture. Now my biggest frustration was that the killing of the family friend felt really out of place for where the rest of the movie went. Besides that it was a pretty decent movie, not great and not a repeat watch, but it was alright. I gave it a 3/5 stars but I wouldn’t press anyone to go out of their way to watch it.

Next up we’re going to be watching Bat’s suggestion of Zombeavers.. This movie centers around ….Zombie Beavers. Yup. This one can be found on Netflix if you have it.

You can suggest our final horror themed streaming movie that you want us to watch and review on future episodes that are on Hulu, Netflix, Amazon Prime or HBOgo.

  • Episode 168: Just think of the Posse-Bilities

Hello and a welcome back to your slightly delayed week in geek. Also, pay no attention to what Bat says, this is totally episode 168… not episode 167. Just in case you were confused by what you’re hearing versus what you’re reading. No theatrical review this week but we do have our second Halloween movie review with The Gallows as well as some geeky nerd news including: The Nintendo Switch, Logan trailer review, Guardians Vol 2 Trailer review and Red Dead trailer review. Yep, it’s a shite ton of trailers to talk about.

Our second streaming Horror movie was from one of our fans Kristi, and she choose

The Gallows. While both of us were pretty lukewarm on this movie we gave it a watch. I think I came out of it more positive than Bat honestly. There were plenty of scares, both of the jump and skin crawling kind. I thought this movie evoked the otherworldly feel of movies like Silent hill and Grave Encounters which surprised me. The movie isn’t great, but it’s a solid watch and makes the most of a low budget, small cast and rather silly concept. While you won’t be missing out on too much if you don’t see this movie we both felt that you would find yourself entertained. We both gave it a 3/5.

Next up we’re going to be watching my suggestion of Knock Knock. This movie centers around Keanu letting in 2 ladies from a storm, sexy things happen… and then it gets weird. We both talked about seeing this one in the theaters but never got around to it so this makes perfect fodder for October’s streaming suggestions. This one can be found on EpixHD if you have it.

  • Episode 167: The Not-So-Great Salt Lake Comic Con Adventure

Hello and a welcome back to your regularly scheduled week in geek. Halloween is coming up fast and so are the scary movie reviews! At long last we have get Bat’s recounting of his Salt Lake City Comic Con adventures. We also discuss the recent trailer releases with Rouge One, John Wick 2 and Power Rangers.

Our first streaming Horror movie was Bat’s choice, Hush. This movie was very much in the vein of movies like Don’t Breath. The concept sold us both pretty quickly with the idea of a Deaf author (who naturally lives in the middle of nowhere) who is terrorized by a psychopathy. We both really thought the use of silence was well done and the movie over all was pretty good. Not great but still worth the watch, both of us gave it a 3/5.

Next up we’re going to be watching a fan suggestion, Kirsti’s choice of The Gallows. This movie’s trailer was pretty bad and did the opposite of selling us on this movie. So much so that we never got around to seeing it. But we’re going to be rectifying this soon enough. Hopefully this movie has a few surprises, though with those abysmal ratings I don’t expect too much.

With October upon us, it is time for our horror streaming reviews!!! And I’m sure my nights of restful sleep are over. Our first entry is Bat’s choice, Hush. This one comes from the director of Oculus and has a similar spin to that of Don’t Breath, so I’m sure I’m going to have nightmares. please feel free to watch along with us.

  • Episode 165: Bad Parenting 101

Welcome back everyone to your week in geek. This week we take things a little slow with some deep breaths… so that we can prepare for Don’t Breath. This movie made me jump and made us both genuinely hold our breath more than a few times. Also we discuss episodes 3 and 4 of Stranger Things, basically I remind Bat as he’s onto episode 8 already. There is also the point of discussing Sony’s press conference where they revealed the PS4 slim and pro, much to our dismay. Hell Bat might actually be buying a Xbox One this winter just to watch 4K blurays.

  • Episode 164: Geek Round Table Stand By It

Welcome back everyone to your week in geek. Bat is back in town and to celebrate, we are having a bunch of friends on the podcast. That means it’s Geek Round Table time! Really this was spurred on by my last podquestion regarding 80’s Adolescence Ensemble Movie. Bat just couldn’t decide so he wanted some help to choose. This week we go through a pretty comprehensive list of movies that fit the criteria and go over which ones we each picked as our favorite. Now there was a bit more people on the podcast than we’ve had before so it gets a bit muddied at parts, but there’s some fun discussion to be heard. We also review the second episode of Stranger Things as our continued streaming review.

  • Episode 163: While Bat Was Out

Welcome back everyone to your week in geek. Bat has trusted me to podcast with a guest of the show, and I actually followed through this time! I know, you’re all so proud of me. I am too. Last week I kind of volun-told TK to be my guest host while Bat and his wife explored Salt Lake City Comic Con. So for this episode we placed our Podquestion and Streaming review on hold. But we bring you a lump sum of nerd news including: PS Now on PC, PS Plus price increase, Disney shutting down Tower of Terror, Star Wars fan movies (see the first one below), New Bill Nye show on Netflix and Luke Cage.

We will pick up next week with our streaming review Stranger Things Episode 2.

But in the mean time if you want to join in you have one more week.

  • Episode 162: This Shit Ain’t Right

Welcome back everyone to your week in geek. Slow news day, and busy pre con week for Bat so we take it easy this episode and discuss the good oll wholesome world of the internet…. That is to say we discuss why the internet can be such a shitty place to people and see if we can find a reason for it. This conversation is spurred on by the recent internet tolling/harassing/hacking of Leslie Jones. From the horrible filth that spewed out on twitter post Ghostbusters release(IndieWire Article) to the recent nude photos being stolen (NY Daily News Article), we discuss the horrible nature of the anonymity of the web. For those curious about the Video that Bat references with the female sportscasters here it is (it starts off light hearted but quickly gets to the harsh reality).

Last week’s streaming review Stranger Things Episode 1. The first episode had a hell of a lot more jump scares than I expected honestly. Though I think that was mostly just me, though Bat’s wife Sarah agreed that it was spooky. The tone over all was enjoyable and definitely was steeped in that 80’s nostalgia. We get our introduction to the main group of kid heroes (I’m assuming) as well as the mysterious girl, Eleven. Beyond some beautifully shot scenes we really were only treated to some teasing of what’s to come, what a pilot should really be. But I sense there is some fun stuff on the horizon. While it didn’t completely wow either of us, Bat said it was no Lost, we are both in this for the long haul. Look forward to our review of the next episode in a week or two as Bat will be taking next week off.

Since we’re only 1 episode in feel free to join in on the episodic experience and discussion.

  • Episode 161: Good Grief

Welcome back everyone to your regularly scheduled week in geek. This is one of those good o’ll slow news weeks which means you, my dear friends, get a whole heaping helping of Bat and Hammer bullshitting. But don’t fret, it’s the good kind of bs. With so little happening with in the nerd world (that we were paying attention to at least) we talk about the future of gaming and what we want from it and what we expect. We also talk about this weeks streaming review and go over our podquestion.

Last week’s streaming review was The Peanuts Movie. And I gotta say… what a disappointment it was. I heard so much love for this movie that I was expecting a pretty fun romp, maybe even something that would sell me on the Peanuts for once. But what I was left with was a rather bland tale with pretty minimal humor. Bat said that he wished that they had taken out the Red Barron parts, stating that it detracted from the stronger main story. But I have to disagree with him, I was just bored. That isn’t to say it’s a horrible movie, just maybe not my type of movie. Then again we both are vocal about not being big Peanuts…nuts? We both gave this one a 2/5, thinking you could better spend your time else where and avoid the not so good grief.

Next week’s streaming review is going to take us on a little bit of an adventure as we start our first Streaming Series review with Stranger Things. This little Netflix original series has been getting a hell of a lot of buzz and the look and feel of the show seems to borrow heavily from the 80’s nostalgia we we so dearly love. We’re starting with just episode 1 but may try to fit in 2 episodes per a podcast if we can swing it. If you want to watch along then make sure to join on in!

  • Episode 160: Star Trek Above and Beyond

Welcome back everyone to your regularly scheduled week in geek. We’re back on schedule and this week we tackled another summer release, Star Trek Beyond. We also discuss this weeks streaming review of Straight Outta Compton, our Podquestion and Nerd News: Black Manta’s reveal, Playstation Neo, No Mans Sky review, Warner Brothers open letter and an update on Making a Murder.

Last week’s streaming review was Straight Outta Compton. And holy shit was this a hell of a movie. Running at over 2 and a half hours this movie was packed with some serious acting and whole shit ton of awesome music. Watching this movie was a bit of unexpected nostalgia. Simply because I didn’t realize how much I really listened to so much of this music and how much of an impact it all really had. This movie hits on so many topics so well and many of these are just coming to the surface again. I gave it a 5/5 and Bat gave it a 4/5 but W\we both loved this movie and would highly recommend anyone watching it if they get the chance. No, screw that, make the time, watch this movie.

Next week’s streaming review is way more vanilla with us watching The Peanuts Movie. You can find this one on HBOgo and please feel free to send us your reviews.
