  • Thousands of jobs at risk as British Steel threatens closure | BBC News
British Steel is launching a consultation that could see the closure of its two blast furnaces at Scunthorpe, in England, putting up to 2,700 jobs at risk out of a workforce of 3,500.
The company said the blast furnaces were "no longer financially sustainable" due to tough market conditions, the imposition of tariffs and higher environmental costs.
The BBC understands British Steel was expecting a £1bn injection of government money to keep the business going, but was offered £500m.
The Prime Minister's official spokesperson said the government had made a "generous offer" to British Steel and it would continue to work with the company and its Chinese owner Jingye to secure its future.

  • Donald Trump announces 25% tariffs on car imports to US | BBC News
President Donald Trump has announced new import taxes of 25% on cars and car parts coming into the US.
Trump said the latest tariffs would come into effect on 2 April, with charges on businesses importing vehicles starting the next day. Taxes on parts are set to start in May or later.
The president said the measure would lead to "tremendous growth" for the industry, promising it would spur jobs and investment in the US.
But analysts have said the move is likely to lead to the temporary shutdown of significant car production in the US, increase prices, and strain relations with allies.
Trump's latest move threatens to upend global car trade and supply chains.

  • Russia says sanctions must be lifted before Ukraine maritime ceasefire can start | BBC News
Russia has said some Western sanctions must be lifted before it begins a maritime ceasefire with Ukraine.
Within hours of the US announcing the two sides had agreed to halt strikes in the Black Sea in separate deals, the Kremlin said it would only take place once sanctions on a number of Russian banks were lifted.
The demands include revoking sanctions on the state agricultural bank Rosselkhozbank and restoring the firms' access to the Swift international payment system.
Overnight, Moscow launched a drone attack on the port city of Mykolaiv, Ukrainian officials said, with President Volodymyr Zelensky saying the strikes were "a clear signal" Russia did not want peace.

  • Thousands turn out for Turkey's seventh night of protests after more than 1,400 arrests | BBC News
Thousands of people in Turkey have turned out for a seventh night of protests which have so far seen more than 1,400 people detained, including students, journalists and lawyers.
The nightly unrest began last Wednesday when Istanbul's Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu - who is seen as the President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's main political rival - was arrested on corruption charges.
Rights groups and the UN have condemned the arrests and the use of force by police on the protesters.
Imamoglu said the allegations against him were politically motivated, a claim the Turkish president has denied.

  • White House blasts Atlantic reporter in Signal leak as new messages revealed | BBC News
Atlantic editor Jeffrey Goldberg has published the exact text messages that Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth sent to a high-level White House group chat providing key details about the US strike on Houthi forces in Yemen just hours before the attacks began.
Goldberg has said he's written a follow-up piece because people deserve to see the texts as they are in the public interest following claims by Trump officials that Goldberg had been lying.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt has dismissed the latest article in the Atlantic as "another hoax written by a Trump-hater who is well known for his sensationalist spin".
Meanwhile, CIA Director John Ratcliffe and Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard are being grilled about the security breach before a House committee.

  • Sudanese army recaptures Khartoum airport from civil war rivals | BBC News
The Sudanese army has told the BBC it has recaptured the airport in the capital, Khartoum, from the paramilitary RSF, marking its latest territorial gain in the brutal two-year civil war.
Gen Mahomed Abdel Rahman al-Bilawi said troops had fully secured it and might be able to clear the rest of the RSF fighters by the end of day.
The army has been moving swiftly since recapturing the presidential palace on Friday, and civilians have been celebrating in the streets as it advances.
The RSF had controlled most of the capital since the war began in April 2023. Nationwide, hundreds of thousands have been killed, and millions have been forced to flee their homes.
Some 12 million Sudanese people have fled their homes since war broke out - that is equivalent to Belgium or Tunisia's entire population.

  • JD Vance will join wife on Greenland trip | BBC News
US Vice-President JD Vance will join his wife Usha in travelling to Greenland on Friday, a visit that follows Donald Trump's threats to take over the island.

Usha Vance had planned to travel to the Danish territory on a cultural visit before her husband announced his plans. Trump's National Security Adviser Mike Waltz is also set to visit this week on a separate trip.
