  • Worst week for US stocks since Covid as President Trump's tariffs kick in | BBC News
Stock markets in the US have ended their worst week since 2020, as Donald Trump's sweeping tariffs kicked in.
All three main indexes on Wall Street dropped by more than 5%, but the president has again insisted that taxes on goods entering the US will "supercharge" the American economy.
Some of the tariffs have now come into force - with a "baseline" 10% charge hitting goods from the UK and many other nations.

  • Has assisted dying in Canada gone too far? | BBC News
In Canada, assisted dying was made legal nearly a decade ago, and more than 15,000 people a year have a medically-assisted death in the country.
The vast majority of them are terminally ill, and many of them choose to die at home.
Canada now has one of the most liberal systems of assisted dying in the world, similar to that operating in the Netherlands and Belgium.
But, opponents say death is coming to be seen as a standard treatment option for those with disabilities and complex medical problems.

  • China to impose additional 34% tariffs on US goods in retaliation for US tariffs | BBC News
China has said it will add a 34% tariff on US goods starting from next week, in retaliation for Donald Trump's tariffs.
Its finance ministry said the US tariffs on Chinese products are "not in line with international trade rules".
US President Donald Trump has announced 54% tariffs on China, which include previous duties already in place. That makes China one of the hardest-hit countries on America's tariff list.
A spokesperson at the ministry of commerce said China has also filed a lawsuit with the World Trade Organization.
