  • Undercover in Myanmar: BBC finds earthquake chaos and trauma in secretive military regime | BBC News
A BBC undercover team has witnessed the horrific trauma left by Myanmar’s earthquake after entering the country and reaching the city of Mandalay which was hit hardest by the disaster.
As Yogita Limaye and her team drove into the city the massive scale of the destruction revealed itself bit by bit. In almost every street they found buildings had completely collapsed, reduced to piles of rubble. At the main city hospital patients are being treated outdoors.
Myanmar's military government has said it's not allowing foreign journalists into the country after the quake, so the BBC team went in without permission. They had to operate carefully because the country has many informers and secret police who spy on their own people on behalf of the ruling military regime.
The BBC team witnessed terrible trauma and suffering with little help for people facing the massive disaster.
Anna Foster presents BBC News at Ten reporting by Yogita Limaye.

  • Trump announces sweeping global tariffs in watershed moment for world trade | BBC News
Donald Trump has announced sweeping tariffs on goods from countries around the world on what he has called “Liberation Day”. The US President said it was the start of a "golden age" for America.
Trump announced that a 25% tariff on all foreign-made vehicles would begin from midnight local time.
On other imports, the EU will face 20% tariffs on goods entering the US, while UK goods will face a 10% tariff.
Trump said countries would face what he called “reciprocal tariffs” according to what he said they charged on US goods, with a minimum charge - what he called a baseline” - of a 10% tariff.
He said Chinese goods would face a tariff of 34% while for India the figure is 26%.
Trump said tit-for-tat tariffs would be imposed to counter not just other countries' tariffs on US goods but what he called “nonmonetary" barriers like currency manipulation and "pollution havens."

  • Deadly strikes in Gaza as Israel expands military operation to seize 'large areas' | BBC News
Deadly Israeli air strikes have been reported in Gaza, as Israel's defence minister said its military would expand its offensive and seize large areas of the Palestinian territory, incorporating them into what he described as "security zones".
Israel Katz said the expanded operation aimed to "destroy and clear the area of terrorists and terrorist infrastructure", and would require a large-scale evacuation of Palestinians.
Later, at least 19 Palestinians, including nine children, were killed in a strike on a UN clinic sheltering displaced families in the northern town of Jabalia, the nearby Indonesian hospital said.
The Israeli military said it targeted "Hamas terrorists" hiding there.
Overnight strikes across Gaza killed at least 20 more people, according to local hospitals.

  • Myanmar military fires at Chinese Red Cross convoy carrying earthquake relief supplies | BBC News
Myanmar's military opened fire at a Chinese Red Cross convoy carrying earthquake relief supplies on Tuesday night.
The Ta'ang National Liberation Army, an armed rebel group, said that military troops shot at the convoy of nine vehicles with machine guns in eastern Shan State.
Myanmar's junta, which said it was investigating the incident, denied shooting directly at the vehicles and said troops fired shots into the air after the convoy did not stop, despite it being signalled to do so.
Myanmar has been gripped by violence amid a civil war between the junta, which seized power in a 2021 coup and ethnic militias and resistance forces across the country.
Rebel groups have unilaterally announced a ceasefire to support earthquake relief efforts, but the military has refused to do the same.

  • Donald Trump set to announce sweeping global tariffs on US 'Liberation Day' | BBC News
US President Donald Trump is preparing to unveil sweeping tariffs, in what the White House has dubbed "Liberation Day”.
He will outline the plans at the White House later today, but at this stage it's unclear how high the tariffs could go and exactly which countries could be targeted.
Trump argues the tariffs will help US manufacturers by encouraging consumers to buy American-made goods, but analysts warned it could push up prices and trigger a trade war.
The White House said Trump is open to last-minute talks, with "quite a few" countries calling the president on the eve of the announcement.
