  • Myanmar death toll rises after earthquake, says military government | BBC News
The death toll in Myanmar following Friday’s major earthquake has risen to 2,056, the ruling military junta has said.
They also say more than 3,900 people are injured, and a further 270 still missing.
Getting information out of Myanmar has proven to be difficult and the country’s military leadership has a history of suppressing the scale of national disasters.
Foreign aid and rescue teams have joined the effort, with a Chinese team reportedly pulling four people alive from the rubble in Mandalay on Monday.

  • World braces for US trade war escalation | BBC News
Stock markets have fallen in Asia and Europe after US President Donald Trump suggested that new tariffs he is set to announce this week will hit all countries, not just those that have the biggest trade imbalances with the US.
Trump made the comments in preparation to unveil a massive slate of import taxes on Wednesday, in what he has called America's "Liberation Day".
The measures will come on top of tariffs already imposed by Washington on aluminium, steel and vehicles, along with increased levies on all goods from China.
With 48 hours to go before the tariffs come into force, the UK is still locked in talks with the US about an exemption.

  • How should Trump negotiate with Putin? | BBC News
The US is seeking to broker a ceasefire in the full-scale war with Ukraine, which is now into its fourth year.
On Tuesday the White House said the two sides had agreed to a limited truce in the Black Sea. But Russia then put forward a list of conditions including the lifting of some Western sanctions, prompting concerns that Moscow was trying to derail any moves towards a ceasefire.
Martin Griffiths, a former United Nations official who has direct experience of negotiating with both Ukraine and Russia, gives his take on how the peace talks are going, and shares his advice on how the Americans could improve their strategy.

  • Former Archbishop of Canterbury tells BBC abuse in Church was 'overwhelming' | BBC News
The former Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby has told the BBC he failed to follow up abuse allegations within the Church of England because the scale of the problem was "absolutely overwhelming".
In November he became the first Archbishop to quit as a result of a scandal in the Church in more than 1,000 years, after a damning independent review found he did not follow up rigorously enough on reports about John Smyth, a serial abuser of children and young men.
In his first interview since resigning, Welby, 68, told the BBC's Laura Kuenssberg that the sheer scale of the problem was "a reason – not an excuse" for his failure to act after taking the job in 2013.

He also suggested Russia was open to the idea of economic cooperation with America in the Arctic “where beneficial to Russia and also to the US”.
Mr Dmitriev was speaking to the BBC’s Russia Editor Steve Rosenberg in Murmansk.
