  • Trump says US-Iran ceasefire still in place after exchange of fire in Strait of Hormuz | BBC News
US President Donald Trump said a ceasefire is still in place with Iran, despite a clash between Iran and US naval destroyers in the Strait of Hormuz for which both sides blamed the other.
The US said Iran launched missiles, drones and small boats against three of its warships, in what it called an "unprovoked attack". Trump said Iran "trifled with us today".
Iran's top military command, meanwhile, alleged the US had targeted an Iranian oil tanker and another vessel approaching the Strait of Hormuz and carried out "aerial attacks" on several coastal areas.
The flare-up comes a day after Iran's foreign ministry had said it was considering a US proposal to end the war.

  • Canary Islands opposes virus-hit cruise ship MV Hondius docking | BBC News
The MV Hondius is sailing towards Spain's Canary Islands where all passengers will be evacuated, after being anchored for three days near Cape Verde.
Three people have died either on board or after travelling on the ship after a hantavirus outbreak.
Everyone on board will undergo a medical assessment on arrival and, if fit to travel, those from abroad will be repatriated to their home countries, Garcia said.
The cruise set off from Argentina a month ago. The cruise ship will dock at Granadilla port in Tenerife, Spain's health minister Monica Garcia said on Wednesday.

  • Moscow scales back Victory Day parade as Zelensky warns world leaders | BBC News
Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky has warned world leaders not to attend Russia’s Victory Day parade in Moscow, which marks the Soviet victory against Nazi Germany in World War II.
Russian leader Vladimir Putin will oversee the event on the Red Square, but this year the 9 May parade is being scaled back. For the first time in nearly two decades there will be no military hardware on Red Square.
The threat of Ukrainian drones over Red Square has been used to justify the paring back of this year's parade.

  • Why Ukraine may restrict its booming surrogacy business | Global News Podcast
Ukraine is considered a global hub for surrogate pregnancy. Four years after the start of Russia's full-scale invasion, people from all over the world still pay thousands of dollars for Ukrainian women to have babies for them.
But Ukraine's parliament is now considering a bill that would introduce stricter oversight of the surrogacy industry and effectively ban access to foreigners, who make up 95% of the intended parents.
The BBC's global health reporter Sofia Bettiza has been speaking to surrogate mothers, and the families who hire them, about the ethical questions surrounding surrogacy, how the industry currently works, and the impact the proposed law could have.
She also tells us what happens when children born to a surrogate are left behind by their intended parents.

  • The story of the Calvine UFO photograph | In Case You Missed It
In 1990, two men walking through the Scottish Highlands captured a photograph that would quietly become one of the UK’s most talked about (and least explained) UFO cases.
The image showed a silent, diamond‑shaped object suspended in the sky. No one knows the identity of the two men who took the picture. The photo was sent to a national newspaper… and then, nothing.
    No article. No public follow‑up.
For decades, the sighting existed only as a rumour - it was mentioned in UFO circles, whispered about online, referenced in documentaries - but with no image released, the case faded into near‑myth.
30 years later a forgotten copy of the photograph resurfaced in the personal files of a retired official bringing the Calvine incident sharply back into focus and raising even more questions than before.
This is the story of the Calvine UFO.
    In this video...

  • Hantavirus outbreak not the start of a pandemic, says World Health Organization | BBC News
Five cases of hantavirus have now been confirmed in relation to an outbreak on a cruise ship, the World Health Organization (WHO) says, and more may follow due to the virus's six week incubation period.
Three people have died either on board or after travelling on the MV Hondius, which set sail from Argentina a month ago.
Contact tracing is under way in several countries for passengers who left the ship before the outbreak was detected - including the UK, Switzerland and the Netherlands.
In a recent WHO news conference, infectious disease epidemiologist Maria van Kerkhove said: "I want to be unequivocal here. This is not SARS-CoV-2. This is not the start of a Covid pandemic. This is an outbreak that we see on a ship".

  • Why Elon Musk is even more powerful than you think | The Global Story
It has been a year since billionaire tech entrepreneur Elon Musk left his informal position in President Trump’s White House in May 2025.
But behind the scenes, Musk has been busy.
Musk has spent the last few weeks in a California courtroom, where he is suing his former business partner, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman.
In January, Musk applied for permission with the US government to launch a million satellites into orbit, some of which he says will serve as solar AI data centres. And he is preparing to take his company SpaceX public, with an estimated valuation of over $1 trillion.
Though his political presence has waned, is it possible that Elon Musk is more powerful than ever?
We speak to the BBC’s North America technology correspondent Lily Jamali about what the world’s richest man has been up to since leaving the White House.
