  • US fighter jet attacks Iranian oil tanker as Trump claims peace deal close | BBC News
A US warplane has fired on an Iranian oil tanker in the Gulf of Oman. The US military said the ship was trying to breach the US imposed blockade of Iran’s ports. The attacks is the latest threat to the four week ceasefire between the two countries.
President Trump has threatened Iran with a new wave of bombing if a deal is not reached to open the strait of Hormuz, the key shipping lane which usually carries around a fifth of the world’s supplies of oil and natural gas.
Trump also suggested the war would end soon and that oil and gas shipments would restart. He again insisted that Iran was ready to make a deal to end the conflict.
Israel has renewed its bombing of Lebanon’s capital Beirut. Iran has previously said that no deal will be reached while Israel continues its attacks on Lebanon.

  • The hantavirus cruise ship outbreak | Global News Podcast
Around 150 people from 23 countries are stranded on a cruise ship in the Atlantic Ocean, after a deadly outbreak of hantavirus. The World Health Organization has confirmed eight cases of the virus onboard the MV Hondius, including three people who have died.
The BBC's health reporter Jim Reed tells us what we know about this strain of hantavirus, how it may have been transmitted to passengers on the ship, and whether - six years after the start of the Covid-19 pandemic - the world is better at dealing with viral outbreaks.
The WHO has confirmed that, while most hantavirus infections occur through contact with rodents or their waste, the strain detected on the ship can be transmitted between humans. The ship has been anchored off the coast of Cape Verde. On Wednesday, three passengers were evacuated for treatment.
Spain has given permission for the ship to now travel to the Canary Islands, where the remaining passengers and crew will be examined, though the president of the Canary Islands says he will not allow the ship to dock there.

  • Inside Iran: What do Iranians think of the war? | The Global Story
Iranians living in Tehran have told the BBC what they think of the war and revealed how the conflict has affected their day to day lives.
In recent days, attacks on ships in the Strait of Hormuz has raised fears that an already fragile ceasefire between the US and Iran could collapse.
Donald Trump's "Project Freedom", which began on Monday, aimed to use the US military to escort cargo ships out of Strait of Hormuz.
Iran, however, insists that it controls the key waterway and has warned that it is “just getting started” in the Strait of Hormuz. This escalation of hostilities risks tipping the region back into full-scale war.
As the conflict enters its third month with no clear end in sight, there has been mounting anxiety about what comes next. But what is the view inside Iran?
In today’s episode we speak to the BBC’s Chief International Correspondent, Lyse Doucet who recently returned from a ten day trip to Tehran where she spoke to government officials and ordinary Iranians about their fears and expectations as this war continues.
New episodes of The Global Story are released daily. If you’re in the UK, listen on BBC Sounds. If you live outside the UK, listen on BBC.com or wherever you get your podcasts.

  • BBC traces how Israeli strikes brought devastation to Lebanon | BBC News
On the afternoon of 8 April in the southern suburbs of Beirut, the neighbourhood of Hay el Sellom was hit by an Israeli air strike.
It was part of a deadly wave of strikes that begun at 14.15 local time and saw about 100 targets across Lebanon hit in the space of just 10 minutes, according to Israel.
The destruction wrought in this brief window would surpass that of any other day in this war. The stated targets included Hezbollah command centres and military sites, but among the casualties were many ordinary Lebanese citizens.
The death toll for the day reached 361, according to the Lebanese authorities, with more than 1,000 injured. In the weeks after the attack, the BBC World Service visited some of the areas hit to piece together what happened on that day.
Hezbollah denied the Israeli claim that it embeds military infrastructure in civilian areas. It added that it never wanted war and is acting in self defence.
The Israeli Defence Force said it killed 250 Hezbollah operators on 8 April. The Lebanese Ministry of Health disputes this, saying the vast majority of those killed were civilians.
