  • Inside Scotland’s vape shop capital: What’s behind the boom? | BBC News
BBC correspondent David Wallace Lockhart travels to Greenock, the town centre with the highest density of shops registered to sell vapes per head of population in Scotland.
New figures from the University of Edinburgh, shared exclusively with BBC News, highlight the growth of outlets selling vapes in Scotland.
With no licensing regime, a retailer simply has to register on a Scottish government online portal and then they can stock these products.
In 2020, there were 5,573 shops selling vapes in Scotland. By 2024, that was up to 7,069 – an increase of 28%.
This growth of 1,500 outlets has not been even across the country. It's concentrated in the most deprived communities.

  • Iran will be 'blown off the face of the Earth' if it attacks US vessels, says Trump | BBC News
The US "should be wary of being dragged back into a quagmire", the Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has warned, as US President Donald Trump's plan to free ships stuck in the Strait of Hormuz threatens the US-Iran ceasefire.
Trump said in an interview with Fox News on Monday that Iran would be "blown off the face of the Earth" if the country attacks US vessels during "Project Freedom".
But Iran insists that it controls the strait and on Monday fired missiles and drones at military and commercial ships, according to the US.
South Korea and the UAE reported damage to commercial ships, while a reported Iranian attack caused a fire at a UAE oil depot.
Around 2,000 ships are estimated to be stuck in the Strait of Hormuz.

  • Ceasefire on brink: Trump says Iran will be “blown off face of earth” it it hits US ships | BBC News
Donald Trump has warned Iran it will be “blown off the face of the earth” if it attacks US vessels trying to reopen a route for shipping through the strait of Hormuz.
It follows a day of escalating tension in which US and Iran have each launched attacks that threaten a return to full-scale war in the Middle East.
The US president launched an operation to break Iran's control of the strait of Hormuz, the key shipping lane where hundreds of commercial vessels are trapped. The closure of the strait has led to a surge in global energy prices because around a fifth of the world's oil and natural gas normally passes through the sea lane.
Iran responded by firing warning shots at US warships and launching drone and missile attacks the United Arab Emirates, causing a large fire at the UAE's biggest port. US Central Command denies a claim in Iranian state media that Iranian missiles hit a US destroyer.
The US said it had attacked seven Iranian "fast boats" and, US Central Command said two US-flagged merchant vessels had “successfully transited through the Strait of Hormuz”. Iran called the claims "downright lies".

  • Trump says US will free ships stranded in strait of Hormuz | BBC News
President Trump has said the US is to help free up ships out of the Persian Gulf, through the strait of Hormuz. It's understood that the plan is for US warships to escort commercial shipping through the strait.
The US has been carrying out a naval blockade of the strait of Hormuz following the ceasefire in its war with Iran. The Iranians has closed the strait with attacks on shipping. The sea lane is critical to international trade because around a fifth of the world's oil and natural gas supplies pass through it.
In a statement on his Truth Social platform, Trump wrote: “This process, Project Freedom, will begin Monday morning, Middle East time. I am fully aware that my representatives are having very positive discussions with the country of Iran, and that these discussions could lead to something very positive for all.”
He described the planned operation as a “humanitarian process” to help the crews of ships stuck in the Gulf by Iran’s closure of the strait and a US naval blockade.
Trump said that “If, in any way, this process is interfered with, that interference will, unfortunately, have to be dealt with forcefully.”
Earlier, President Trump said he had reviewed and rejected Iran’s latest peace proposal, saying it was “not acceptable”.
Human rights groups inside Iran have accused the regime of carrying out widespread torture and execution. The BBC has been able to speak to some of those inside Iran.
Clive Myrie presents BBC News at Ten reporting by Peter Bowes and Fergal Keane.
