  • UK airlines to be allowed to cancel flights in advance over fuel shortages | BBC News
Airlines will be able to cancel flights weeks in advance, without losing valuable take off and landing slots at busy airports, if they face fuel shortages this summer.
New plans drawn up by the government will let carriers plan ahead, helping to avoid disruptive last-minute cancellations for passengers.
The proposals would allow airlines to merge flights on routes with multiple trips to the same destination on the same day, meaning passengers could be moved from their original booking to a similar one to save fuel.
The UK imports about 65% of the jet fuel it uses, a significant portion of which comes from the Middle East under normal circumstances. But, the closure of the Strait of Hormuz means those supplies cannot get through.

  • Is this the most scenic railway in the world? | BBC News
The Settle-Carlisle railway in the north of England is now 150-years-old.
Yet while the line travels through some of Britain's most magnificent countryside, it was once threatened with closure.
In the 1980s, there was a proposal to close the line but thousands of people - and one dog - objected.
The line starts in Leeds and passes through Shipley and Skipton, but it is the section between North Yorkshire and Cumbria that is world-famous for its views.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said an oil terminal in northwest Russia had been significantly damaged, while two Russian oil tankers were struck near the Russian Black Sea port of Novorossiysk.
There are no details on damage to the ships, but Zelensky said the vessels were part of Russia's "shadow fleet" used to evade Western sanctions.

  • Germany: US troops in both countries' interests | BBC News
Germany's Defence Minister Boris Pistorius has said US troops in his country was in the interest of both Germany and the US.
Speaking to the DPA news agency, Pistorius stressed "the presence of American soldiers in Europe, and particularly in Germany, is in our interest and in the interest of the US".
The Nato military alliance said it was seeking clarification from Washington.
On Saturday, US President Donald Trump said further cuts could take place, without providing details. The US has more than 36,000 active duty troops in Germany.
It comes as two senior US Republican lawmakers criticised the Pentagon's decision to cut 5,000 US troops stationed in Germany, saying it risked undermining deterrence and would send the wrong signal to Russia.

  • Spirit Airlines shutting down after rescue talks collapse | BBC News
Spirit Airlines is shutting down as a business after failing to secure a $500m (£368m) bailout from the Trump administration.
The budget airline was in talks with the US government about a rescue deal which would have saved it from collapse.
But discussions collapsed and the carrier said in an announcement on its website on Saturday that with "great disappointment" the airline had "started an orderly wind-down of our operations, effective immediately".
Spirit was emerging from its second bankruptcy filing in recent years before the US-Israel war in Iran, but the resulting surge in jet fuel costs pushed it over the brink.
