  • Starmer: Police must have feared for their lives in Golders Green attack | BBC Radio 4 Today
The terror threat level has been increased to severe as Britain's top police officer says that the UK faces a pandemic of antisemitism and the government's adviser on terrorism says we face a national emergency.
This crisis on the streets of Britain is just one of many crises which Sir Keir Starmer, the prime minister, has been facing in recent weeks and months.
The crisis triggered by the war in Iran threatens to tear up his plans and hopes for the economy. The ongoing war in Ukraine continues to cause real problems for British businesses and British households.
Nick Robinson has been speaking to Sir Keir Starmer for BBC Radio 4’s Today programme, about his meeting with police who arrested the suspect in the Golders Green attack.
He criticises comments about the arrest from Green Party leader Zack Polanski. Mr Polanski has now apologised for "sharing a tweet in haste," adding that he should not have commented on police actions via social media.
Listen to the Today programme on BBC Radio 4 and BBC Sounds.

  • 'Is Anthropic the new Dr Frankenstein?' | BBC News
AI Decoded speaks to leading tech podcaster Scott Galloway about the growing controversy surrounding Anthropic’s latest AI model, Claude Mythos.
During testing, the system uncovered thousands of hidden vulnerabilities in the software underpinning most of the world’s computers — prompting Anthropic to decide it was too dangerous to release.
The company says Mythos can outperform humans at certain hacking and cyber‑security tasks, raising fresh concerns among regulators, lawmakers and financial institutions about the risks to global digital infrastructure.
Also on the show, we reveal how US students are changing their majors at university in order to 'AI proof' their future careers and how nearly half of Gen Z would like to turn back the clock to the late 90's before AI was even a thing.
Joining Christian Fraser is the BBC's AI correspondent Marc Cieslak and AI Decoded co-host Priya Lakhani.

  • Trump repeats that he is 'not happy' with Iran as deadline to seek approval for war looms | BBC News
US President Donald Trump said that he is “not satisfied” with proposals from Iran, reports say that Tehran has delivered a new plan to Pakistan which is mediating between the two sides.
President Trump told reporters on Friday afternoon: "We just had a conversation with Iran. Let's see what happens. But, I would say that I am not happy."
He said a deal has been hard to reach in part because Iranian leadership was "very confused", after a number of its top military officials were killed in the war.
Trump said he was briefed with options by US Central Command on Thursday, ranging from "blast the hell out of them and finish them forever" to "make a deal".
Meanwhile, there’s a stark warning about the impact of the war on global food supplies. The head of a giant fertiliser firm said that that could cost up to 10 billion meals a week.

  • Is Trump about to attack Iran again? | Global News Podcast
The US-Israel war on Iran is on hold - for the moment - but although a ceasefire has been in place since early April, diplomatic talks in Pakistan have not produced a permanent peace deal. Now Iranian state media says Tehran has put forward a new proposal for negotiations, but President Trump has said he's not satisfied with it.
The US is continuing to exert economic pressure on Iran with its blockade of Iranian ports in the Strait of Hormuz. But there are growing reports that President Trump is considering possible new strikes on Iran - as the deadline passes for Congressional approval for further military action. According to US law, the President must ask lawmakers for permission for any military action longer than 60 days.
There are reports that President Trump has been briefed about possible options for another offensive, while Bloomberg mentions the potential deployment of a new hypersonic missile called Dark Eagle.
We ask our diplomatic correspondent Paul Adams what US military action might look like, and which side is under more pressure to make a deal.

An Oscar that went missing after its winner was forced to check the golden statuette at a New York airport has been found, the airline involved has told the BBC.
Pavel Talankin said he had the Academy Award in his carry-on bag for a flight to Germany on Wednesday, but airport security stopped him at John F Kennedy International Airport because they said the award could be used as a weapon.
When he landed in Germany, the Oscar for his documentary Mr Nobody Against Putin was gone.
"The Oscar statue has now been located and is safely in our care in Frankfurt," Lufthansa said, adding that the airline was in direct contact with the guest to arrange the statue's return "as quickly as possible".

  • Man appears in court charged with attempted murder of two Jewish men | BBC News
A man has appeared in court charged with attempted murder after two Jewish men were stabbed in Golders Green, north London on Wednesday.
Essa Suleiman, 45, is accused of attacking Shloime Rand, 34, and Moshe Shine, 76.
Both men suffered serious injuries and were treated in hospital, with the Metropolitan Police declaring it a terrorist incident.
Suleiman is also accused of attempting to murder Ishmail Hussein in a knife attack at Hussein's flat in Southwark, south London, earlier the same day. Hussein was somebody that Suleiman had known for approximately 20 years. He also faces a charge of possessing a knife in a public place in Golders Green.
In the aftermath, the UK's terror threat level was raised to severe following the stabbing. The UK government said the threat level had been rising "for some time", adding that the increased level was "not solely" as a result of the incident earlier this week.
