  • Golders Green stabbing suspect was referred to government's counter-terrorism programme | BBC News
The suspect in the Golders Green stabbings was referred to the UK government's counter-terrorism Prevent programme in 2020, it has emerged.
This comes as two Jewish men, 34-year-old Shloime Rand and 76-year-old Moshe Shine, were attacked in London on Wednesday, which police are treating as a terrorist incident
The programme is a key part of the UK's counter-terror strategy, and places a legal duty on public bodies to identify people who may turn to extremism.
However, the Metropolitan Police also said they “will not be providing any further information in respect of this matter at this time”.

  • Inside London Zoo’s new wildlife hospital | BBC News
London Zoo is marking the 200th anniversary of the Zoological Society of London (ZSL) - the conservation charity that owns and operates the zoo - with plans for a new state‑of‑the‑art wildlife health centre, funded by a £20m bequest from a mystery donor. The facility would allow visitors to observe animal medical procedures up close, including post-mortems.
BBC News’ Justin Rowlatt was given behind‑the‑scenes access to the zoo’s existing animal hospital to see what the new centre could mean for conservation, research and public engagement. The plans have also prompted debate about animal welfare and the role of modern zoos.

  • Ex-FBI director surrenders over charge of threatening President Trump in Instagram post | BBC News
Former FBI Director James Comey surrendered to authorities on Wednesday to face a charge alleging that an image he briefly shared on social media posed a threat to the life of US President Donald Trump.
It stems from an Instagram post shared by Comey, which contained an image of seashells on a beach arranged to read "86 47".
"Eighty-six" is a slang term for "get rid of", and prosecutors allege it encourages violence against Trump, the 47th president.
Comey denies any wrongdoing, saying he did not know what the numbers meant, and accused the prosecution of political motivation.
This marks the second time the justice department has brought criminal charges against Comey, a longtime critic of Trump.

  • Iran crackdown: Why there is a surge in executions | Global News Podcast
The United Nations has condemned a sweeping crackdown in Iran, warning that executions and mass arrests have surged during the war. Since the start of the US-Israel war on Iran, at least 21 people have been executed and more than 4,000 detained on national security charges, with many facing unfair trials and torture, according to the UN's rights office OHCHR.
"I am appalled that – on top of the already severe impacts of the conflict – the rights of the Iranian people continue to be stripped from them by the authorities, in harsh and brutal ways," the UN human rights chief Volker Türk said, calling for an immediate end to capital punishment in Iran.
It comes after US President Donald Trump claimed that his intervention helped save eight women arrested in Iran from the death penalty. Iran responded by saying that none of the women Trump mentioned were ever facing execution and accused the president of fake reports.
We speak to Parham Ghobadi from BBC Persian.
