  • Could the US-Israel war with Iran help China? | Global News Podcast
As the world watches Iran's blockade of ships carrying oil and gas through the Strait of Hormuz, there are reports that tankers with links to China are being allowed through.
So far Beijing has remained relatively quiet about the US-Israel war with Iran.
China has been buying Iranian oil for years, helping to sustain the Islamic Republic throughout decades of international sanctions.
There are global fears about the economic effects of the war, but could it present an opportunity for Beijing?
President Xi Jinping has already been casting China as a more stable and reliable trading partner than the US following President Donald Trump's tariff policies.
Beijing has confirmed that an upcoming visit by President Trump to China has been postponed for several weeks.
Meanwhile, Washington has bolstered its military presence in the Gulf with assets from the Pacific region, where it has served as a deterrent to possible Chinese aggression against Taiwan.
We ask the BBC's Beijing correspondent Laura Bicker what China stands to gain from the US-Israel war with Iran.

  • Iran says its facilities on the world’s largest natural gas field attacked | BBC News
Iran's armed forces have warned they will take "decisive action" in response to attacks on the country’s energy infrastructure, according to a statement carried on the IRGC-affiliated news agency Tasnim.
Iran said its facilities at the South Pars gas field were targeted.
"The enemy has attacked part of Iran's fuel and energy infrastructure in the south," the Iranian military said in a statement.
"As previously warned, if the fuel, energy, gas, and economic infrastructures of our country are attacked by the American-Zionist enemy, in addition to a powerful counterattack against the enemy, we will severely strike the origin of that aggression as well.”
Qatar's foreign ministry spokesman, Majed Al Ansari, said the South Pars facilities were targeted by Israel.
Both Qatar and Iran operate facilities which extract from the same gas field.

  • Iran's intelligence minister killed in overnight strike, Israel says | BBC News
Israel says Iran's intelligence minister Esmail Khatib has been killed in an overnight strike.
It comes after Iran's top security official Ali Larijani was also killed yesterday.
The IDF said Khatib's Ministry of Intelligence played a key role in supporting the regime’s "repression and terrorist activities", and that he himself played a "significant role" in the "arrest and killing of protesters" during a recent crackdown on demonstrations in Iran.
"His elimination joins dozens of other eliminations of senior commanders of the Iranian terrorist regime... and significantly degrades the regime’s command and control structures," the IDF added.
Iran has not yet commented on reports of Khatib's death.
Meanwhile, Israel has launched a series of strikes on Lebanon's capital Beirut, as it continues its offensive against Hezbollah.
