  • Brent crude oil almost $100 a barrel, as three more cargo ships attacked in the Gulf | BBC News
Oil prices climbed back above $100 a barrel and stock markets fell after three more cargo vessels were hit in the Gulf.
News of further strikes on shipping helped to push Brent crude up by more than 9% on Thursday, before the price eased a little to $97.90.
The jump came despite the International Energy Agency saying on Wednesday that it will release a record 400 million barrels of oil in an attempt to curb the economic impact of the US-Israel war with Iran.
Investors are increasingly concerned that the global economy will take longer to recover if strikes to shipping and energy infrastructure in and around the Strait of Hormuz continue.

  • Iran steps up fuel supply attacks - oil reserves released as global energy crisis looms | BBC News
Iran has stepped up its attacks on energy infrastructure across the Gulf and there have been more strikes on shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, further threatening oil and gas supplies and a global energy crisis.
The International Energy Agency has ordered the largest release of stockpiled oil reserves in its history, in an attempt to stabilise global oil prices which have soared since the start of the US and Israeli attacks on Iran. 32 countries have agreed to release around 400 million barrels of crude oil onto world markets.
In Oman, oil storage tanks in the port of Salalah caught fire with reports they had been hit by drones. The UAE and Qatar reported more attacks from Iranian missiles and drones.
Israel launched another wave of strikes at what it said were Hezbollah targets in Lebanon, saying it's in response to rockets fired at Israel.
Clive Myrie presents BBC News at Ten reporting by Simon Jack, Ellie Price, Wyre Davies, and Sarah Smith.

  • Can diplomacy still work with Iran? | The Global Story
As the US-Israeli strikes on Iran continue and the death toll continues to rise, so too does the war of words. So how will the war end and will the US negotiate with Iran?
US President Trump described Mojtaba Khamenei, Iran's choice for new supreme leader, as "unacceptable". He also said he believes the war will be over “pretty quickly”, but it’s not clear how - or when.
Nate Swanson, a former State Department official who spent nearly two decades in the US government working on American policy towards Iran, answers our questions on how the next stage of the conflict is likely to unfold - and whether a negotiated peace with Iran is still an option.
New episodes of The Global Story are released daily. If you’re in the UK, listen on BBC Sounds. If you live outside the UK, listen on BBC.com or wherever you get your podcasts.
