  • One Piece's Miss Wednesday speaks out about fan backlash | BBC News
Landing a role in one of the biggest TV shows on the planet is a reason for any actor to celebrate.
That moment came for Charithra Chandran in 2024, when she was revealed as the latest addition to the cast of One Piece.
The Netflix show is a live-action adaptation of the incredibly popular manga (comic) created by Japanese artist Eiichiro Oda, which has reportedly sold 600 million volumes worldwide since it launched in 1997.
The decision to cast Chandran prompted backlash from a vocal set of fans, but it wasn't her lack of familiarity with the source material that upset them.
It was the colour of her skin.
Vivi, who operates under the alias Miss Wednesday, is portrayed in the manga as a white woman.
Chandran faced a wave of comments complaining she wasn't right for the role, with some going so far as to criticise her for agreeing to take it at all.
She spoke to BBC Newsbeat’s Abu Bakar Yasin in the lead up to series two’s launch.

  • Trump says Iran war will be “over pretty quickly” as oil price hits 6 year high | BBC News
President Trump has said the war in Iran will be a “short term excursion” and “complete, pretty much”, while also insisting that it must end in “ultimate victory” with “the enemy totally and decisively defeated”.
The US president also claimed that the war began because Iran had been preparing to attack the US “within a week”. He said: “They were ready. They had all these missiles, far more than anyone thought, and they were going to attack us. They were going to attack all of the Middle East and Israel, and if they had a nuclear weapon they would’ve used it on Israel, and this was going to be a major attack.”
President Trump was speaking as oil prices surged to a recent high of more than $100 per barrel, its highest level for six years, before falling back.
There have been more US and Israeli attacks on Iranian targets, while Turkey, the UAE, Kuwait and Qatar all said they had intercepted more Iranian missiles aimed at them.
Clive Myrie presents BBC News at Ten reporting from Dubai.
