US President Donald Trump said the "short term" price increase is a "a very small price to pay" for world peace.

  • Mojtaba Khamenei succeeds father as Iran’s new Supreme Leader | BBC News
Mojtaba Khamenei has been named as Iran’s new Supreme Leader, according to the country’s state media.
He replaces his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed at his compound in Tehran in the first wave of US and Israeli strikes on the country.
The move by Iran’s clerical leadership comes after Donald Trump described Mojtaba Khamenei as an unacceptable choice, and said that he should decide who leads the country.
Members of the clerical body responsible for selecting Iran’s highest authority announced the decision, calling on Iranians to rally behind him and preserve national unity.
The announcement came on another day of US and Israeli air strikes. Oil depots in the capital Tehran were hit, covering the city in toxic black smoke. Iran has again targeted neighbouring Gulf States. There are growing fears about the impact on the global economy. Oil and gas prices have soared since the start of the war, with economists warning of renewed inflation and a risk of an economic downturn.
Iran carried out further attacks on neighbouring countries. And Israel carried out more attacks in Lebanon, saying its targets were commanders of the Lebanese branch of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards’ Quds Force. Lebanon’s government said almost 400 people have been killed since the new Israeli assault begin, including more than 80 children.

  • Mojtaba Khamenei to succeed his father as Iran’s supreme leader | BBC News
Iran's Assembly of Experts has chosen Mojtaba Khamenei to replace his killed father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, as the country's new supreme leader, state media has reported.
Unlike his father, Mojtaba has largely kept a low profile - he has never held any government office, nor has he given public speeches or interviews.
However, there are longstanding rumours about his influence as a gatekeeper to his father.
US diplomatic cables, which were published by WikiLeaks in the late 2000s, described him as "the power behind the robes" who was widely regarded as a "capable and forceful leader" within the regime, according to the Associated Press.

  • Impact on UK-US special relationship on day nine of Iran war | BBC News
Sir Keir Starmer and Donald Trump have spoken for the first time since the US president angrily criticised the UK's Iran response.
On Saturday, the US president said the UK was considering sending aircraft carriers to the Middle East but dismissed the prospect, writing on social media "we don't need people that join Wars after we've already won!" - while labelling Britain "our once great ally".
Sir Keir has previously said the UK would not join offensive actions, but agreed to let the US use British bases for defensive strikes on Iranian missile sites.
Meanwhile, a member of Iran's Assembly of Experts says it has reached a consensus on who wil replace Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, but some "obstacles" remain in the appointment.

  • Donald Trump says UK aircraft carriers not needed in US-Israel war with Iran | BBC News
US President Donald Trump has told the UK he does not need its aircraft carriers and accused Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer of seeking to "join wars after we've already won", as the US and Israel continue to launch strikes on Iran.
In a social media post, Trump said the UK was "giving serious thought" to sending two aircraft carriers to the Middle East, before saying the US does not "need them". Downing Street has not responded.
One of the UK's two aircraft carriers has been placed on advanced readiness, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) said.
Trump's comments come after US bomber jets were seen landing in the UK as the US started using British bases for "specific defensive operations".
