An elderly woman whose eviction sparked nationwide protests over Spain's housing crisis and a political row that triggered early elections has died, according to Madrid's tenants union.

Maricarmen Abascal, 87, was forcibly removed on a stretcher from her apartment of more than 70 years on 23 September after she was unable to afford steep rent increases.

The company that owned the flat later offered to allow her to return at a lower rate - but she was unable to sign an agreement as she had been admitted to hospital.

Announcing her death, Madrid Tenants' Union said Abascal's situation marked "a turning point in the history of this country".

Following an emergency court hearing on Wednesday, Christa Pike’s lawyers said preserving evidence from her failed execution was just the first step in a long legal battle after the 50-year-old death row inmate survived an execution attempt last week.

The judge ordered the state to preserve a broad range of physical evidence such as IVs and syringes – as well as all communications and surveillance video.

Her lawyers said it was necessary for transparency – and that the public should not simply take the state’s word about what happened.

The night before Pike woke up and began speaking, her lawyers said they believed she was brain dead and were told life support would be removed the next day.

She woke up "angry and confused", they said, asking "where am I?".

Her recovery, they added, will be a long road. It’s unclear if she’ll regain function of her arms which they say are extremely swollen.

Convicted murderer Christa Pike has woken up and begun speaking from her hospital bed almost a week after authorities in the US state of Tennessee botched her execution, her lawyers said.

She was sent to hospital after surviving two attempts to execute her via lethal injection for the 1995 murder of a 19-year-old she met at a summer camp for troubled teens.

Now her lawyers are asking for answers and for evidence to be preserved. So what happens now?

Adaptations, remakes and reboots are all the rage right now, and there’s often one question that crops up - why?

Carrie, Prime Video's new TV series based on Stephen King's debut novel, has been no exception.

It's not the first time the tale of high school bullies and supernatural powers has been adapted for the screen.

Director Brian de Palma's 1976 movie version is a horror classic, with some of its most famous scenes and imagery widely considered iconic within the genre.

But the cast and creator of the latest version, which drags Carrie's story forward 50 years into a world of social media, have been telling BBC Newsbeat's Eleanor Doyle why they believe it's still relevant in 2026.
