  • Israel confirms it has retrieved remains of final Gaza hostage | BBC News
The Israeli military says it has retrieved the body of the last remaining hostage in Gaza.
It had been searching for Master Sgt Ran Gvili since the ceasefire with Hamas began in October.
Hamas was meant to return all hostages, alive and dead, within 72 hours of the ceasefire taking effect. Twenty living Israeli hostages and the bodies of 27 dead Israeli and foreign hostages were handed over but for the past few weeks Hamas said it had not yet been able to locate Gvili.
On Sunday, Israel said it would reopen Gaza's key border crossing with Egypt once the operation to find and return Gvili was complete.

  • Israel will open Gaza crossing once last hostage body returned | BBC News
Israel says it has agreed to reopen the Gaza Strip's key border crossing with Egypt only after an operation to retrieve the body of the last remaining Israeli hostage in the territory is complete.
The Rafah crossing was meant to have reopened during the first stage of the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, which began in October.
However, the Israeli government has made that conditional on Hamas making every effort to return the body of the last hostage, police officer Master Sgt Ran Gvili.
On Sunday, Israel's military said it had begun a new search for his remains, saying the operation was taking place at a cemetery in Gaza City and that it could last several days.

  • Republican senators join calls for fuller investigation into Minneapolis killing | BBC News
The Trump administration is facing pressure to launch a full investigation into the second Minneapolis killing by federal agents in two weeks, as one Republican governor says "enough is enough".
US President Donald Trump told the Wall Street Journal his administration is "reviewing everything" and also indicates he could eventually withdraw agents from the city - but he's given no time frame.
Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old US citizen, was shot dead on Saturday after an incident with federal agents.
The Trump administration says Pretti carried a gun and posed a danger to officers - while no available video shows him holding a gun.

  • Minneapolis shooting: video appears to show victim disarmed before being shot dead | BBC News
Video showing the killing after a second US citizen in Minneapolis by ICE federal agents appears to suggest that a gun had been taken from him before he was shot dead.
Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old nurse, was killed after what began as a scuffle. Pretti appeared to be filming the immigration enforcement agents using his phone when he was pushed to the ground and restrained by seven officers. One of them appears to remove a handgun from Pretti’s waist, before another officer opens fire. In total it appears that 10 shots were fired as he lay on the ground. After the shooting local police said they believed that Pretti had a licence authorising him to carry a handgun.
Federal and state officials offered conflicting accounts about the shooting. The Trump administration claimed the ICE agents had fired “defensive” shots and described Pretti as a “domestic terrorist”. Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem said he was there "to perpetuate violence" and had approached federal agents with a 9mm semi-automatic handgun.
Local officials and the victim's family have challenged that account, pointing out that Pretti had a phone in his hand, not a weapon. None of the videos of the shooting appear to show Pretti holding a gun at any time before his death. His parents accused the administration of spreading "sickening lies" about what happened.
Hundreds of demonstrators braved freezing weather to take to the streets over the shooting.
Clive Myrie presents BBC News at Ten reporting by Tom Bateman in Minneapolis.

  • Andy Burnham's bid to return as UK MP blocked | BBC News
Andy Burnham has been blocked from standing as a candidate for an upcoming parliamentary by-election in the UK by Labour's ruling body.
As a directly elected mayor, Burnham had to get approval from Labour's national executive committee, after he applied to be a candidate on Saturday.
Some NEC members were concerned about an expensive mayoral election to replace Burnham, and allies of Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer feared he could mount a leadership challenge, should he return to Westminster.
The move is likely to infuriate Labour MPs and some ministers who said local party members should have had the option of choosing the Greater Manchester mayor as the candidate.
