  • Ukraine condemns 'brutal' Russian strikes ahead of second day of peace talks | BBC News
Russia launched drone and missile attacks on Ukraine overnight, killing one person and injuring 23 others despite taking part in talks with the US aimed at ending the war.
The mayor of Ukrainian capital Kyiv said one person had died and four had been wounded following a "massive enemy attack", while Kharkiv's mayor reported that 19 people had been hurt during a sustained assault on the city.
Delegations from Russia, Ukraine and the US have been meeting in Abu Dhabi in the first trilateral talks since the Kremlin launched a full-scale invasion of its neighbour in 2022.
A source has told the BBC that some progress had been made but the key issue of territory remains unresolved.

  • Row over US President Trump’s claims about Nato troops | BBC News
The White House has made its first comments since US President Donald Trump sparked a row by saying that NATO troops had stayed “a little back” off the front lines during the war in Afghanistan.
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the words were "insulting and frankly appalling”.
Prince Harry, who served in Afghanistan, has called for the sacrifices of Nato soldiers to be "spoken about truthfully and with respect".
The White House's deputy press secretary said that Trump was right to have stressed that America's contribution to NATO dwarf those of other countries. There was no direct response to the outrage caused.

  • Can Ukraine get peace without losing land? | Global News Podcast
President Volodymyr Zelensky says it's "all about the land" as Ukraine, Russia and the US hold their first trilateral talks since the start of the war.
Vladimir Putin has demanded control of the Donbas region as a condition of a peace, but giving away territory is a red line for Kyiv.
So, is there any hope of getting past this stalemate? Can President Donald Trump's negotiating team curb the Kremlin's land-grabbing objectives? And what do the Ukrainian people make of all this, as they face air strikes and power outages, amid freezing temperatures?
The BBC's correspondent Wyre Davies spoke to us while on the road in Eastern Europe.

  • Are ICE immigration agents acting outside the law? | BBC Americast
Donald Trump came into power with a promise to carry out the “largest mass deportation programme in history”.
One year on, ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) raids in US cities are one of biggest political issues dividing America right now, with questions over how ICE agents are behaving and who they are targeting.
In this episode, Anthony, Marianna and Justin look at whether ICE agents are going beyond their remit, and is public opinion starting to turn against the president?
We focus on Minneapolis after the killing of 37 year old Renee Nicole Good two weeks ago, who was shot dead by an ICE officer.
Anti-ICE protests have been ongoing within the city, and this week, the Vice President JD Vance who was visiting Minneapolis called for Democrats to co-operate with the Trump agenda.
Justin talks to John Sandweg, former Acting Director of ICE under President Obama who gives us his insight into how ICE agents are being vetted and recruited, plus the wider impact of diverting billions of dollars into Trump’s enforcement operations.
    HOSTS:
    • Justin Webb, Radio 4 presenter
    • Anthony Zurcher, North America Correspondent
    • Marianna Spring, Social Media Investigations Senior Correspondent
    GUEST:

  • Trump Dominates Davos, Carney's Resistance & That Greenland 'Deal' | BBC News
Donald Trump’s actions at Davos have caused a stir - but have they moved the dial on how other world leaders respond to the US President?
Trump used his two days at the World Economic Forum at Davos to set out his worldview in a wide-ranging speech, agree what he called a 'framework of future deal' over Greenland and hold an inauguration for his ‘Board of Peace’.
Adam and Chris are joined by Lyse Doucet, chief international correspondent, and Caitriona Perry, chief presenter for BBC News in Washington, to discuss how Donald Trump dominated Davos plus whether Canadian PM Mark Carney is fighting back.

  • Hundreds of illegal waste tips operating in England, investigation finds | BBC News
Hundreds of illegal dumps are operating across England, including at least 11 so-called "super sites" containing tens of thousands of tonnes of rubbish, a BBC investigation has found.
More than 700 illegal tips were shut down in 2024/25, but data released by the Environment Agency has revealed some 517 dumps were still active at the end of last year.
Police said many are run by organised crime gangs, who are making cash by charging much less than legitimate operators to take and bury waste.
An Environment Agency spokesman said it was committed to tackling waste crime and was "pulling every lever to disrupt those who profit from the harm illegal waste sites cause".

  • EU leaders held emergency summit in Brussels to discuss Greenland | BBC News
European Union leaders held an emergency informal summit to address an escalation in transatlantic tensions regarding Greenland and US trade threats.
The EU said it will defend itself from any kind of coercion after US President Donald Trump took back his threats to impose tariffs on US allies who opposed his plan to take over Greenland.
Trump said a framework deal with the NATO secretary general would allow the US to achieve everything it’s wanted in the semi-autonomous Danish territory.
The meeting concluded during the early hours of Friday morning, with Denmark’s Prime Minister now travelling from Brussels to Greenland.

  • Zelensky hopes first Ukraine, Russia and US talks are 'step towards ending war' | BBC News
Russian, Ukrainian and US negotiators are heading to Abu Dhabi on Friday for the first trilateral talks since Russia's full-scale invasion nearly four years ago.
These talks are crunch time for Ukraine, with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky suggesting the meeting will focus on the status of Ukraine's eastern Donbas region.
At the World Economic Forum in Davos yesterday, Zelensky said he had reached an agreement with Trump on future US security guarantees for Ukraine in the event of a deal.
It comes after Russia's President Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump's envoys held what the Kremlin called "useful" but "very frank" talks in Moscow.
