  • Donald Trump backtracks on using force over Greenland and drops new tariffs on allies | BBC News
Donald Trump has backed down over Greenland - ruling out his previous threats to seize the island by force - and withdrawing his plan to impose new tariffs on countries opposing his proposals.
Instead the US President told world leaders meeting in Davos, Switzerland that he is seeking immediate negotiations to acquire the island.  He said: “We probably won't get anything unless I decide to use excessive strength and force, where we would be frankly unstoppable. But I won't do that.”
He also said is dropping plans to add a 10% tariff to goods from eight European countries over their opposition to his push to acquire Greenland.
His wide-ranging speech, in which he appeared to confuse Greenland with Iceland four times, lasted more than an hour.
In a post on social media Trump says he has “formed the framework of a future deal with respect to Greenland" after talks with Nato's secretary general, Mark Rutte.
US markets rose sharply following the announcement. The news offered some relief for the US's European allies, who had been facing the possibility of an armed stand-off with their NATO ally.
However President Trump's new position leaves many questions unanswered, with allies unclear on US policy towards Greenland going forward.

  • What is Trump's Board of Peace? | Global News Podcast
When the White House announced the creation of a new international body, it was framed as part of the Gaza peace plan.
But US President Donald Trump appears to have much more wide-reaching ambitions for his Board of Peace. A leaked draft of the charter suggests it will have a broader purpose of resolving global conflicts.
Many countries and world leaders have been invited to join, including China and Russia.
Is this a new international body designed to challenge or replace the United Nations? And what power would it have?

  • Donald Trump presents Europe a dilemma on Greenland | BBC News
The US's Nato allies in Europe are facing a difficult and dangerous dilemma when it comes to how to respond to Donald Trump’s determination to acquire Greenland, the BBC's Security Correspondent Frank Gardner says.
The Foreign Ministers of Denmark and Greenland returned empty-handed from talks in Washington.
So now there’s talk of the need to get tough with Trump, with French President Macron and German Chancellor Merz mooting, albeit reluctantly, the possibility of reciprocal trade sanctions on US imports.
But while this may just conceivably achieve a US climbdown, it is also playing with fire.

  • Harry says Mail publisher made his wife Meghan's 'life a misery' | BBC News
The Duke of Sussex was visibly emotional as he told a court the life of his wife, the Duchess of Sussex, had been made "an absolute misery" by the publisher of the Daily Mail and the Mail on Sunday.
Prince Harry was speaking as he concluded his evidence in his case against Associated Newspapers Limited (ANL) at the High Court, much of which focused on articles about his relationships before meeting Meghan.
The prince's voice broke as he said the court battle had been a "horrible experience" for his family and that all he wanted was "an apology and some accountability".
He is one of seven high-profile claimants accusing ANL of "grave breaches of privacy" over a 20-year period. The publisher has denied wrongdoing.

  • Trump wants 'immediate negotiations' for Greenland but 'won't use force' | BBC News
US President Donald Trump says he is seeking immediate negotiations to acquire Greenland, which he called a "vast, almost uninhabited and undeveloped country, sitting undefended".
He told world leaders at the World Economic Forum in Switzerland: "We probably won't get anything unless I decide to use excessive strength and force, where we would be frankly unstoppable. But I won't do that"
The US already has more than 100 military personnel permanently stationed at its Pituffik base in Greenland's north-west - a facility it has operated since World War Two.
Under existing agreements with Denmark, the US has the power to bring as many troops as it wants to Greenland.

  • Train driver killed in second deadly Spain rail crash in days | BBC News
A train driver has been killed and at least 37 people injured, five seriously, after a commuter train derailed and crashed near Barcelona, two days after a deadly two-train collision in southern Spain.
According to local officials, the Rodalies train collided with a retaining wall which fell on to the track between Gelida and Sant Sadurní.
The incident occurred as heavy storms battered north-eastern Spain, with coastal areas in the east and north-west of Spain on high alert because of the weather.
Meanwhile, another train on the Barcelona commuter network also derailed on Tuesday.

  • President Trump heads to Davos as Greenland tensions rise | BBC News
Donald Trump will today deliver a speech to world leaders in Davos, Switzerland, after doubling down on his threats to take control of Greenland.
The US President is set to speak at the World Economic Forum - where French President Macron warned yesterday of a "shift towards a world without rules".
Meanwhile, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said that Europe is “fully prepared to act if necessary” over Trump's threats to apply retaliatory tariffs on eight European countries.
Trump’s arrival is set to be delayed by several hours after a “minor electrical issue” on Air Force One forced the US delegation to turn back.

  • Donald Trump denies US taking over Greenland could break up NATO | BBC News
Donald Trump has dismissed suggestions that his plan to take control of Greenland, in the face of opposition by his NATO allies, could lead to the break up of the alliance.
Asked about a possible threat to the future of NATO, President Trump said: “Something is going to happen which will be very good for everybody. Nato will be very happy and we will be very happy. But we need it [Greenland] for security purposes, we need it for national security and even world security.”
At a press conference at the White House, Donald Trump was also asked how far he was willing to go to acquire Greenland and replied: “You’ll find out”. He repeated his threat to impose new punitive tariffs on countries that opposed his plans.
Other leaders intensified their criticism of the US administration. The French President Emmanuel Macron said that Europe had little regard for bullies and preferred the “rule of law to brutality.” Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney warned of a “rupture” in the world order.
Mr Carney was speaking at the World Economic Forum annual meeting in Switzerland, where the US President is due to arrive on Wednesday to address world leaders and business elites.
