  • Donald Trump texts with Norway PM Jonas Gahr Støre link Greenland to Nobel Prize | BBC News
US President Donald Trump messaged Norway's Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre saying not being given the Nobel Peace Prize means he no longer has "an obligation to think purely of peace".
Trump said he will "100%" follow through on his threats to impose further tariffs if a deal over Greenland is not reached and added "no comment" when asked whether he would use force to seize the island.
Greenland's Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen said "we will not let ourselves be pressured", having previously said: "The latest statements from the US, including threats of tariffs, do not change that line".
UK PM Keir Starmer has called Trump's plan to impose tariffs on eight countries "completely wrong", while also seeming to downplay retaliatory tariffs.

  • At least 21 dead, dozens missing in massive Pakistan mall fire | BBC News
A massive fire that tore through a shopping centre in Pakistan's largest city, Karachi, has killed 21 people, including a firefighter, and rescuers are racing to find dozens more still missing.

It took firefighters more than 24 hours to put out the blaze in Gul Plaza that started on Saturday night. The building housed 1,200 stores and spanned 8,000 sq m (86,111 sq ft).

Parts of the building have collapsed, with officials saying the debris and lack of ventilation were hampering rescue efforts.

"Almost the entire building was already engulfed in flames", by the time rescuers arrived at the site on Saturday night, local emergency services said.

  • China hits growth goal after exports defy US tariffs | BBC News
China said its economy expanded by 5% last year, meeting Beijing's official target as a record trade surplus boosted growth.
The world's second-largest economy reached its goal despite growth slowing to 4.5% in the final three months of 2025.
China's past year has been marked by struggles to boost domestic spending, a prolonged property crisis and turmoil caused by US President Donald Trump's tariff policies.
Experts said the figures point to a "two-speed economy", with manufacturing and exports propping up expansion while people are still spending cautiously and the real estate market continues to weigh on the country.

  • UK PM Sir Keir Starmer says Donald Trump's Greenland threat 'completely wrong' | BBC News
The UK Prime Minister has said the decision on Greenland's "belongs to the people of Greenland and the Kingdom of Denmark alone".
It has come as US President Donald Trump said he will impose a new 10% levy on goods from eight allied nations if they oppose his proposed takeover of the autonomous Danish territory.
Trump has called for the "complete and total purchase" of Greenland, adding that Denmark's supporters had created "a level of risk in play that is not tenable or sustainable".

  • Europe warns Trump of “dangerous downward spiral” and threatens tariff retaliation | BBC News
European leaders have united in condemning President Trump’s threat of new tariffs against allies who oppose his plan to annexe Greenland.
A joint statement of European leaders said: “Tariff threats undermine transatlantic relations and risk a dangerous downward spiral”. The statement, signed by the leaders of Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the UK, the Netherlands and Finland said: “We are committed to upholding our sovereignty.”
The UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer told the US president in a phone call that he was wrong to make such a threat against NATO allies.
The EU made clear it could impose retaliatory tariffs on American goods or even consider economic sanctions against the United States if the US tariffs were imposed. The head of the European Council announced an emergency summit and said the EU showed “readiness to defend ourselves against any form of coercion”.
Europe’s stance could place it on a collision course with the US. Trump has said he will place sanctions on eight European nations, including the UK, that have deployed troops to Greenland in response to US threats over its future.
Jane Hill presents BBC News at Ten reporting by Nick Beake, Joe Pike, Faisal Islam and Katya Adler.

  • How will Trump's tariff threats reshape the US-Europe relationship? | BBC News
Today we look at US President Donald Trump’s plans to impose further tariffs on European countries, including the UK, because of their opposition to the US taking over Greenland.
As well as the UK, Trump announced a 10% tariff on goods from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the Netherlands and Finland. They would come into force on 1 February, but could later rise to 25% - and would last until a deal was reached.
Laura and Paddy are joined by chief political correspondent Henry Zeffman and The Sun on Sunday’s political editor Kate Ferguson to talk through what it all means, and what it might do to Keir Starmer’s ‘special relationship’ with Trump.
They also talk about why the news might be a bit awkward for Nigel Farage and his Reform Party.

No decision has yet been made on whether to deploy the soldiers from Alaska, the official said.
