  • Marine Le Pen's appeal trial begins | Global News Podcast
Last year, the leader of the French far-right National Rally party, Marine Le Pen, was banned from running for public office after being found guilty of embezzling EU funds. It means - as it stands - she is not able to run in next year's presidential election.
Now, she is appealing that ruling at the Paris Court of Appeal. The case is likely to last around month but a decision is not expected before the summer.
BBC's Paris correspondent, Hugh Schofield has the background.

  • We choose Denmark over US, Greenland's PM says | BBC News
Greenland's prime minister has said his people would choose Denmark over the US if they were asked to make such a choice "here and now".
Jens-Frederik Nielsen's remark at a joint news conference with Denmark's prime minister is the strongest by a representative of the semi-autonomous Danish territory since US President Donald Trump renewed his plan to annex it.
Trump says the US needs to "own" Greenland to defend against Russia and China. The White House has suggested buying the island, but not ruled out the use of force to annex it.

  • Minnesota sues Trump administration to block ICE agents deployment | BBC News
The US state of Minnesota has sued the Trump administration in an attempt to block a surge of federal immigration agents into the state.
The lawsuit argues the deployment amounts to an unconstitutional "federal invasion". Minnesota's Attorney General Keith Ellison said immigration operations had upended life for millions and caused "chaos and violence".
It comes after Renee Good, 37, was shot dead by an immigration agent in Minneapolis last week, triggering large protests in the city.
The Trump administration has described the legal action as "baseless". It has also pledged to significantly increase its deployment in the area.

  • Eyewitnesses describe deadly crackdown in Iran | BBC News
Almost 650 protesters have been killed by Iranian security forces in anti-government demonstrations that have swept Iran since the 28 December, according to one human rights group.
But sources in Iran have told the BBC the death toll is likely to be higher than reported.
Coach Amir Mohammad Koohkan, 26, and student Rubina Aminian, 23, are among hundreds of protesters reportedly killed during two weeks of protests in Iran.
Iranian authorities accused the US and Israel of fomenting trouble and condemned "terrorist actions", state media reported.
Internet access has been cut by the authorities, making reporting from Iran more difficult than ever. BBC Persian is banned from reporting inside Iran by the government.
