  • Donald Trump considers options to ‘acquire’ Greenland | BBC News
US President Donald Trump has been discussing "a range of options" to acquire Greenland, including use of the military, the White House said.
The White House told the BBC that acquiring Greenland - a semi-autonomous region of fellow Nato member Denmark – was a "national security priority".
The statement came hours after European leaders issued a joint statement rallying behind Denmark, which has been pushing back against Trump's ambitions for the Arctic island.

  • Trump “considering using military” to take Greenland says White House | BBC News
The White House has said President Trump is considering using the US military to acquire Greenland. It said that doing so was a “national security priority” for his administration and it is considering a range of options to secure that goal.
Donald Trump recently stated that the US "needed" Greenland – a semi-autonomous region of fellow Nato member Denmark – for security reasons. He has repeatedly insisted that it must come under US control.
The latest White House statement came shortly after European leaders rallied behind Denmark, whose Prime Minister, Mette Frederiksen, has warned that any attack by the US on Greenland would spell the end of Nato. Under the rules of the military alliance allies are expected to go to each other's aid in case of external attacks.
Six European leaders backed Denmark in a joint statement which said: "Greenland belongs to its people, and only Denmark and Greenland can decide on matters concerning their relations." The leaders of the UK, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain stressed they were as keen as the US to ensure Arctic security and said it must be achieved by NATO allies acting collectively. They called for "upholding the principles of the UN Charter, including sovereignty, territorial integrity and the inviolability of borders".
The European leaders held their urgent talks about Greenland while meeting in Paris to discuss the future of Ukraine and hopes of a peace agreement there. The UK and France signed a declaration of intent to deploy forces to Ukraine in the event of a peace deal.
The latest suggestions by the US administration that it could acquire Greenland by force come just days after a US military assault on Venezuela, the seizure of its President Nicolas Maduro and a declaration that the country would be run by Washington. Recent national security policy from the Trump administration states its intention to ensure US domination of the “western hemisphere”, including central and south America and the western Arctic.

  • Iran anti-government protests spread to majority of provinces, videos show | BBC News
Protests have broken out in at least 17 of Iran's 31 provinces, presenting the largest challenge to the country's clerical establishment since 2022, a BBC Verify and BBC Persian analysis has found.
The BBC's analysis of protests includes only those for which we have verified video footage - the true number is almost certainly far higher. There are reports of protests in a further 11 provinces.
The wave of protests has spread rapidly across Iran since 28 December, when anger initially broke out in the capital Tehran following a fresh and sharp devaluation of the country's currency against the dollar and other major foreign currencies.

  • Greenland belongs to its people, say six European leaders | BBC News
Six European allies have rallied to support Denmark following renewed insistence by the US that it must have control over Greenland.
"Greenland belongs to its people, and only Denmark and Greenland can decide on matters concerning their relations," the leaders of the UK, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain, and Denmark said in a joint statement.

  • Zelensky meets world leaders in Paris for 'Coalition of the Willing' talks | BBC News
French President Emmanuel Macron is hosting Ukraine's leader Volodymyr Zelensky and other key allies of the country as efforts intensify to agree security guarantees for Kyiv in the event of a ceasefire with Russia.
Heads of state and top officials from more than 30 countries - part of the so-called Coalition of the Willing - are meeting in Paris, including US mediators in peace talks Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, President Donald Trump's son-in-law.
Zelensky met Trump recently and said his plan to end the war with Russia was 90% agreed. However, the proposals have yet to be presented to Russia, whose response so far has been far from encouraging.
Looming larger over the talks is Trump's insistence that the US wants to annex Greenland - the semi-autonomous territory that is part of Denmark, a Nato ally.

  • US Congress divided over capture of Venezuela's Nicolás Maduro | BBC News
Members of Congress are split after President Donald Trump's senior officials, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth, briefed the lawmakers on the US’s removal of Venezuela's former president Nicolás Maduro.
The Republican House Speaker, Mike Johnson, said the US was "demanding a change of how a regime rules”, not carrying out a regime change, and that Trump was within the authority given to him by the US Constitution.
Meanwhile, Chuck Schumer, the top Democrat in the US Senate, said the meeting had raised more questions than answers and characterised the plan to run Venezuela as "vague, based on wishful thinking, and unsatisfying".
Trump insisted during a news interview that the US was not at war with the country and that the person ultimately in charge of Venezuela was "me".

  • Swiss ski bar not inspected for five years before deadly fire, officials say | BBC News
Officials in Switzerland investigating a fire at a ski bar which killed 40 people on New Year's Day said no safety checks, inspections or audits had been carried out at the venue between 2020 and 2025.
Crans-Montana’s mayor, Nicolas Feraud, said: "We regret that - we owe it to the families and we will accept the responsibility.”
Officials also announced a ban on the use of sparklers in local venues - sparklers on bottles carried too close to the ceiling were the likely cause of the fire, a preliminary investigation has found.
A criminal investigation has been launched into the French couple who managed the La Constellation bar - a venue known to be popular with a younger crowd in the ski resort town, where the drinking age is 16.

  • Maduro in court - Venezuela's deposed leader tells judge “I am a prisoner of war” | BBC News
Venezuela’s Nicolas Maduro has told a court in New York that he is still the country’s president and ”a prisoner of war", as he pleaded not guilty to drug trafficking charges.
Mr Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores were abducted from Venezuela’s capital Caracas on Saturday by US special forces during a military assault.
In Venezuela, Delcy Rodriguez has been sworn in as interim President in the National Assembly. She described Maduro and his wife as heroes and said she took the oath of office with pain because of the suffering caused by "illegitimate military aggression”.
The United Nations Security Council has been holding an emergency debate on the US operation. The UN Secretary General António Guterres said he was "deeply concerned that rules of international law have not been respected”. Iran and China both called for Maduro's immediate release with China's foreign ministry accusing the US of "a clear violation of international law”.
Shares in some US oil companies have risen sharply, after the Trump administration made clear that it plans to control Venezuela's oil industry.
