  • Children in Gaza return to school after years without formal education | BBC News
Children in Gaza have returned to school after years without formal education.
Tents now serve as classrooms but for many, this is the first return to routine and education since the war began on 7 October 2023.
According to Unicef, more than 97% of schools in Gaza were damaged or destroyed during the war.
The IDF has made repeated claims that Hamas uses civilian infrastructure including schools to carry out operations but has rarely provided solid evidence.

Hundreds of ICE agents have been deployed to Minneapolis, in the state of Minnesota, as part of the White House's crackdown on illegal immigration.

  • Video shows ICE immigration officer shooting dead woman driver in Minneapolis | BBC News
A US immigration officer on an enforcement raid in Minneapolis has shot dead a woman in a car, provoking outrage from residents and politicians in the city.
The federal agents deployed by the Trump administration shot and killed the woman as she drove her vehicle in the street where they were operating.
The shooting was captured on video, taking place as the driver of a dark red SUV tried to slowly drive away from agents who were ordering her to get out of the vehicle and trying to open its door.
In a social media statement President Trump defended the ICE officers, saying that he had watched a video clip of the incident which he called a “horrible thing to watch”. He described the woman who was shot dead in her car as “very disorderly, obstructing and resisting” and said she “violently, wilfully, and viciously ran over the ICE Officer, who seems to have shot her in self defence”.
The US Department for Homeland Security described the driver as a “domestic terrorist” who “weaponized her vehicle” and attempted “to run over our law enforcement officers in an attempt to kill them”. It stated: “An ICE officer, fearing for his life, the lives of his fellow law enforcement and the safety of the public, fired defensive shots. He used his training and saved his own life and that of his fellow officers.”
Jacob Frey, the mayor of Minneapolis held a press conference in which he told the ICE immigration officers to leave the city. He said the Department for Homeland Security was: “trying to spin this as an action of self-defence. Having seen the video myself, I want to tell everybody directly, that is bullshit.” He accused the ICE agents of terrorising citizens, saying: “People are being hurt. Families are being ripped apart. Longterm Minneapolis residents that have contributed so greatly to our city, to our culture, to our economy are being terrorized and now, somebody is dead.”

  • US seizes Russian-flagged tanker in Atlantic as UK confirms it gave support to operation | BBC News
The US has seized a Russian-flagged vessel in the North Atlantic linked to Venezuelan oil.
It also said it had apprehended a second tanker in the Caribbean in the “back-to-back” boarding of two “ghost fleet” ships.
The UK military supported the US operation to seize the tanker in the Atlantic, the Marinera, with air surveillance and a navy ship, the Ministry of Defence has said.
Moscow has said the tanker was only temporarily flagged to Russia, and that "no state has the right to use force against vessels properly registered in other countries' jurisdictions”.

  • UK military supported US operation to seize tanker in Atlantic | BBC News
UK military supported US operation to seize tanker in Atlantic with air surveillance and navy ship, Ministry of Defence says.
The ship is accused of breaking US sanctions and shipping Iranian oil - it's historically transported Venezuelan crude oil but reports say it's empty at the moment.
"This action formed part of global efforts to crack down on sanctions busting", UK Defence Secretary John Healey MP said.
"This ship, with a nefarious history, is part of a Russian-Iranian axis of sanctions evasion which is fuelling terrorism, conflict, and misery from the Middle East to Ukraine", he added.

  • Scientists investigate why more young people are getting bowel cancer | BBC News
Bowel cancer samples that have been stored for up to a century will be analysed to try to solve the mysterious rise of the disease in young people.
Despite the majority of bowel cancers still being found in older adults, the rise in younger patients has been seen around the world.
This includes in the UK where bowel cancer rates have increased by 75% in the under-24s since the early 1990s - but scientists are unclear why.
Scientists at St Mark's The National Bowel Hospital are now going through advanced scientific analysis to understand what caused each cancer and what's changed over the decades.
