  • Russian fighter jets violating Estonian airspace intercepted by Nato | BBC News
Three Russian warplanes that violated Estonian airspace have been intercepted by Nato, the military alliance has said.
Estonia's foreign ministry condemned the incursion as "brazen".
It said three Russian MiG-31 fighter jets entered the airspace of a Nato member "without permission and remained there for a total of 12 minutes" on Friday over the Gulf of Finland.
Nato spokesperson Allison Hart said the military alliance "responded immediately and intercepted the Russian aircraft", and called it "yet another example of reckless Russian behaviour and Nato's ability to respond".
The Russian military has not publicly commented on the issue.

  • MI6 launches dark web portal to attract spies in Russia | BBC News
The UK’s MI6 is launching its own dedicated portal on the dark web in the hope of attracting new spies online, notably from Russia.
Secure messaging platform Silent Courier aims to strengthen national security by making it easier for the intelligence agency to recruit, the Foreign Office said.
Potential agents in Russia and around the world will be targeted by the UK, it adds.
On Friday, outgoing MI6 Chief Sir Richard Moore appealed to potential spies globally to anonymously access the dark web by following instructions on MI6's own YouTube video.
In his final public speech as MI6 Chief, Sir Richard launched the worldwide recruiting drive targeting potential spies in Russia, China, Iran, North Korea and elsewhere.

  • Nato intercepts Russian warplanes violating Estonian airspace | BBC News
Three Russian warplanes that violated Estonian airspace have been intercepted by Nato, the military alliance has said.
Estonia's foreign ministry in Tallinn condemned the incursion as "brazen". It said three Russian MiG-31 fighter jets entered the airspace of a Nato member "without permission and remained there for a total of 12 minutes" on Friday over the Gulf of Finland.
Nato spokesperson Allison Hart said the military alliance "responded immediately and intercepted the Russian aircraft", calling it "yet another example of reckless Russian behaviour and Nato's ability to respond". She gave no further details.
The Russian military has not publicly commented on the issue.
Tensions have escalated between the Nato military alliance and Russia since Moscow launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
They have risen in the last week, after Poland and Romania - both Nato members - said Russian drones breached their airspace.

  • US blocks UN call for Gaza ceasefire for sixth time | BBC News
The US has for the sixth time vetoed a draft resolution at the United Nations Security Council that would have demanded an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza and the release of hostages taken from Israel on October 7.
US deputy Middle East envoy Morgan Ortagus said the text did not go far enough in condemning Hamas or recognise Israel's right to defend itself.
All 14 other members of the Security Council voted in favour of the draft resolution - which described the humanitarian situation in Gaza as "catastrophic" and called on Israel to lift all aid restrictions.
It comes as the UN's humanitarian office warns that the last lifelines for civilians are collapsing in Gaza City as Israel expands its military offensive.
In Gaza, thousands of people are continuing to flee the region amid ongoing deadly attacks as Israeli tanks and troops continue to advance on the third day of a ground offensive.
Olga Cherevko, a spokeswoman for the UN's humanitarian office, told the BBC the situation in Gaza City is "nothing short of cataclysmic".

  • British couple held for months by Taliban released from prison | BBC News
A British couple who were detained for nearly eight months by the Taliban in Afghanistan have been released, an official with knowledge of the case has said.
Peter Reynolds, 80, and his wife Barbie, 76, who have lived in the country for nearly two decades, were held after being stopped while travelling home on 1 February.
The couple were freed through Qatari mediation, after they were transferred from Kabul's central prison to a larger prison during the final phase of negotiations, the official said.
A Qatari official said the couple will fly to Qatar for medical checks before travelling on to the UK, despite having a long-term home in Afghanistan's Bamiyan province.
It follows months of public lobbying by their family for their release.
Six days ago, an American woman who was detained with them and subsequently released told the BBC they were "literally dying" in prison and that "time is running out".

  • I have no relationship with Trump, Brazil's President Lula tells BBC | BBC News
Brazil's President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has told the BBC in an exclusive interview that he has "no relationship" with US President Donald Trump.
Lula has frequently criticised Trump, but this is the clearest signal yet that he thinks communication between him and his US counterpart is now broken.
Even though the US has a trade surplus with Brazil, Donald Trump imposed 50% tariffs on Brazilian goods in July. He cited the trial on coup charges of Brazil's right-wing former president Jair Bolsonaro as a trigger. Lula described the tariffs as "eminently political".
The two leaders have never spoken directly to each other. Trump has previously said that Lula can "call him anytime" - but Lula insisted that members of the Trump Administration "do not want to talk".

  • Detecting ‘hidden’ pancreatic cancer cases | BBC News
There are currently no test to look for early signs of pancreatic cancer, which means survival rates are lower than for many other cancers.
The disease often has vague symptoms and can lead to death within months of diagnosis.
BBC Tech Now’s Lara Lewington explores a new medical trial looking to change that, which involves evaluating a blood test that might detect the disease at it’s earliest stages.
