  • British couple held by Taliban for months feared they would be executed | BBC News
A British couple released by the Taliban in Afghanistan last week said they were detained in 10 different prisons and at one point thought they would be executed.
Peter, 80, and wife Barbie Reynolds, 76, said it was never explained to them why they were being held, nor why they were released.
The couple, who have run a charity programme in Afghanistan for almost two decades, arrived back in the UK on Saturday after seven and a half months in detention.
Both suffered health problems while in prison, including severe anaemia. Taliban officials maintained they received adequate medical care during their detention and that their human rights were respected.

  • Duchess of York dropped from charity over Epstein email | BBC News
The Duchess of York has been removed as patron of a children's charity, in the wake of an email emerging in which she called sex offender Jeffrey Epstein her "supreme friend".
Julia's House, a UK children's hospice charity, has removed Sarah Ferguson, the former wife of Prince Andrew, from her role as a patron.
"Following the information shared this weekend on the Duchess of York's correspondence with Jeffrey Epstein, Julia's House has taken the decision that it would be inappropriate for her to continue as a patron of the charity," said a charity spokesperson.
A spokesperson for the duchess said she was not commenting on the charity's decision.

  • Has Trump cancelled Jimmy Kimmel over Charlie Kirk? | BBC Americast
Donald Trump has finished his state visit to the UK and it ended with a joint press conference with the British PM Keir Starmer. What did the two leaders say about Gaza and Ukraine, why was Epstein not really mentioned, and what does it tell us about the relationship between the two countries? Sarah - who was in the room with Trump and Starmer at Chequers - also reveals what Susie Wiles, the US president’s chief of staff, told her about Trump.
The other big topic discussed - and the story dominating US headlines - is the broadcaster ABC’s decision to take Jimmy Kimmel’s late-night show off the air after his comments on the killing of Charlie Kirk. Justin, Marianna and Sarah unpack what that means for late night talk shows and free speech in America.
    HOSTS:
    • Justin Webb, Radio 4 presenter
    • Sarah Smith, North America Editor
    • Marianna Spring, Social Media Investigations Senior Correspondent

  • South Korea would accept Trump-Kim deal to freeze North Korea’s nuclear programme | BBC News
South Korea’s President Lee Jae Myung would accept a deal between Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un in which North Korea agreed to freeze production of its nuclear weapons, rather than get rid of them.
Speaking to the BBC’s Jean Mackenzie, he said he would agree to the freeze as an emergency interim measure, so long as denuclearisation remained the ultimate goal.
Since taking office in June, he has been vocal about wanting President Trump to resume nuclear talks with Kim, which broke down in 2019 during Trump’s first term.
But Trump is proving to be an unpredictable ally for South Korea, after hundreds of Korean workers were detained for days in the US earlier this month, after immigration authorities raided an electric vehicle battery factory in Georgia.
