  • Manhunt under way after two police officers shot dead in Porepunkah, Australia | BBC News
A huge manhunt is under way for a "heavily armed" male suspect after two Australian police officers were shot dead and one was injured at a property in a small rural town in Victoria state.
Police described the situation in Porepunkah, in the Australian Alps, as an "active incident" with hundreds of personnel deployed to find the suspect.
Officers were attacked as 10 of them attended the property to serve an arrest warrant.
Police said the suspect escaped into the bush alone and on foot after the shooting. Officers are still trying to locate the man's wife and children.
The state police chief said all available resources were being used in the manhunt and urged local people to stay indoors.

  • International condemnation of Israel as double strike on Gaza hospital kills at least 20 | BBC News
At least 20 people, including 5 journalists working for the international media, have been killed in two Israeli airstrikes in Gaza. The Israeli military hit a hospital - Nasser - in the southern city of Khan Younis.
After a first attack, a second strike took place as rescue crews and journalists rushed to the scene. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel regretted what he described as a 'tragic mishap', after the UN Secretary General condemned the killings.
There was international condemnation of Israel, from the head of the United Nations as well as from charities working in Gaza and media organisations.

It follows an Israeli strike two weeks ago which killed six journalists - who also worked for western news outlets - outside another hospital in Gaza City.

Israel does not allow international journalists from media organisations, including the BBC, independent access to Gaza.

  • Thousands demand peace during protest in Israel's capital Tel Aviv | BBC News
Thousands of people gathered in Israel's capital Tel Aviv and cities across Israel to call out the government's plans to take control of Gaza City, for them to organise a ceasefire as well as calling for peace.
It comes as the Israeli government demands the release of all 50 hostages held in Gaza, casting doubt on whether it will accept a new proposal for a 60-day ceasefire that Hamas agreed to last week.
Palestinian sources said the proposal would see 10 living and 18 dead hostages handed over while the sides negotiated a permanent ceasefire and the return of the other hostages.

US authorities have informed him he may be deported to Uganda, following his refusal to accept a plea deal, his lawyers say.

  • Five journalists among 20 killed in Israeli strike on Gaza hospital, officials say | BBC News
At least 20 people, including five journalists working for international media, are reported to have been killed in an Israeli strike on Nasser Hospital in the southern Gaza Strip.
A Reuters cameraman, an Associated Press (AP) journalist, and an Al Jazeera photographer were among them. It is not clear who the other two worked for.
Several people were killed in an initial strike, and others in a second which happened as rescuers attended the scene, the Hamas-run health ministry said.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) says an investigation is being carried out into its attack on the hospital. It added that it "does not target journalists as such", but did not give details about the strike.
The latest deaths brings the number of journalists killed in Gaza since the start of the war there in October 2023 to nearly 200.

  • Inside Donetsk as residents flee attacks on Ukrainian region Russia wants to control | BBC News
The Donetsk region of eastern Ukraine has long been in Moscow's sights.
Russia already controls 70% of the city of Donetsk and nearly all of neighbouring Luhansk - and is making slow but steady advances.
This part of Donetsk is critical to Ukraine's defensive. If lost or given to Russia, neighbouring Kharkiv and Zaporizhia regions – and beyond – would be at greater risk.
Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky has rejected suggestions that it could be lost by the end of this year, predicting it would take four more years for Russia to fully occupy what remains.
But it's unlikely Ukraine will recapture significant territory there without new weaponry or additional support from the West.
BBC correspondent Quentin Sommerville follows volunteers carrying out evacuations in eastern Ukraine as drone attacks continue.

  • Ukraine frontline report: fighting rages in Donetsk region as Putin demands full control | BBC News
Ukraine’s eastern Donetsk region is on the frontline of the military and diplomatic battle over the country’s future. It’s rich in natural resources and has been fought over since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, at huge cost to both sides.
Russia already occupies most of Donetsk. Now President Putin is demanding that Ukraine hands over the part it still controls, as part of the price of any peace agreement.
Meanwhile the fighting continues, with Russian troops making slow but steady advances. Towns and villages lie in ruins, drones circle overhead searching for targets and the last remaining civilians are forced to flee for their lives.
A BBC team has travelled into Donetsk, to the frontline town of Dobropillia, which is under daily Russian attack and with its water supplies cut off.
Reeta Chakrabarti presents BBC News at Ten reporting by Quentin Somerville and Darren Conway.

  • Russia says Ukraine launched drone attack on nuclear site as Kyiv marks independence day | BBC News
A fire has been put out at a nuclear power plant in Russia's western Kursk region and air defences have shot down a Ukrainian drone, Russian officials have said.
The drone detonated when it fell and damaged a transformer, but radiation levels were normal and there were no casualties, a post from the plant's account on messaging app Telegram said.
It comes as Ukraine is celebrating its independence day on Sunday, which marks the country's declaration of independence from the Soviet Union in 1991.
Ukraine has not commented on the Russian accusation regarding the nuclear site in Kursk.

  • Ghislaine Maxwell says Epstein client list does not exist | BBC News
Ghislaine Maxwell, the convicted associate of sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, has told US officials that a much-discussed "client list" does not exist.
The Trump administration has faced pressure to disclose information about Epstein, with whom Donald Trump was friendly before.
Maxwell was interviewed in July and, according to the released transcript, said she did not witness any inappropriate conduct by Trump or former President Bill Clinton.
She also called allegations of Prince Andrew having sexual relations with an underage girl in Maxwell's home "mind-blowingly not conceivable".
