  • Lyle Menendez joins brother in being denied parole in parents' murder | BBC News
Lyle Menendez has been denied parole one day after his brother Erik was similarly blocked from being freed from prison after more than three decades.
The Menendez brothers, who were convicted in the 1989 killings of their parents in their Beverly Hills mansion, were both rejected for release after separate, lengthy hearings before California's parole board.
It marks a major setback for the pair who had seen recent court wins that brought them closer than ever to freedom.

  • Famine in Gaza is “failure of humanity” says United Nations | BBC News
The head of the United Nations has described the famine confirmed in Gaza City and its surrounding areas as a "failure of humanity".
Antonio Gutteres said the situation was a "man-made disaster" after a UN-backed body, which identifies hunger levels around the world, raised its food insecurity status in parts of the territory to Phase 5 - the highest and most severe.
The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) says more than half a million people across Gaza are facing "catastrophic" conditions characterised by "starvation, destitution and death".
The report was labelled an "outright lie" by Israel, which has denied there is starvation in the territory.
The UN says Israel is continuing to restrict the amount of aid entering Gaza, which Israel also denies.
Its denials are in direct contradiction to what more than 100 humanitarian groups, witnesses on the ground, multiple UN bodies, and several of Israel's allies have said.
The IPC says that an "immediate, at-scale response" is needed or there will be an "unacceptable escalation" in famine-related deaths.
Reeta Chakrabarti presents BBC News at Ten reporting by Lucy Williamson and Caroline Hawley.

  • Why is the UK government fighting to keep asylum seekers in hotels? | BBC Newscast
Today, we discuss the government seeking the right to appeal against a High Court ruling blocking a hotel in Essex from housing asylum seekers.
Epping Forest District Council was granted a temporary injunction to stop people being placed at the Bell Hotel in Essex earlier this week. The Home Secretary Yvette Cooper unsuccessfully tried to get the case dismissed by intervening at the last minute.
Adam speaks to BBC political correspondent Alex Forsyth, Dominic Casciani, BBC home and legal affairs correspondent and Luke Tryl, a pollster from the More in Common think tank.
We recorded the podcast live on BBC Radio 5 Live, while Adam filled in for Matt Chorley.

  • Has Putin changed his mind on meeting Zelensky? | BBC Ukrainecast
After key summits in Alaska and Washington, Donald Trump has talked up the chances of a meeting between Volodymyr Zelensky and Vladimir Putin.
So, has a change in tone from the US on security guarantees moved the needle? Is a temporary ceasefire now less likely? And would a face-to-face encounter with a leader he’s long sought to delegitimise, mark a clear concession from President Putin?
To answer your questions, Jamie Coomarasamy is joined in the Ukrainecast studio by the BBC’s Russia editor Steve Rosenberg and Ukraine correspondent James Waterhouse, who are meeting in person for the first time themselves.

  • FBI searches home of Trump adviser-turned-critic John Bolton | BBC News
The FBI has been searching the home of Donald Trump's former national security adviser John Bolton, who has become a vocal critic of the US president since serving in his first administration.
Agents have been seen at Bolton's home in the Washington DC suburb of Bethesda, Maryland, and the FBI has also been operating near Bolton’s downtown Washington DC office, the agency confirmed.
The search is related to an investigation over classified documents, the BBC’s US news partner CBS reports.
Trump has previously accused his former national security adviser of misusing classified information in Bolton's 2020 book, which was highly critical of Trump's first presidency.

  • Proposed Ukraine land concessions are ‘Putin's trap’, EU diplomat says | BBC News
Pushing Ukraine to give up territories to Russia as part of a future peace deal is a "trap that Putin wants us to walk into”, the European Union’s top diplomat said.
Kaja Kallas - who has been placed on the Kremlin's "wanted list" - also spoke at length about "credible and robust" security guarantees for Ukraine, in her first UK interview since EU leaders joined Donald Trump's White House peace talks.
The Donbas region in eastern Ukraine has long been contested by Russia, and Ukraine has consistently rejected conceding it to the Kremlin in exchange for peace - despite President Trump stressing the need for "swapping of territories".

  • UN-backed report confirms famine in Gaza City | BBC News
Gaza City and its surrounding area is now experiencing famine, a UN-backed body of food security experts has confirmed.
The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC), which is used by governments and international bodies to identify hunger levels around the world, has raised its classification to Phase 5 - the highest and most severe.
It said that over half a million people across the Gaza Strip are facing "catastrophic" conditions characterised by "starvation, destitution and death".
Israel said the IPC report was based on "Hamas lies". It continues to restrict the amount of aid entering Gaza and has previously denied there is starvation in the territory.
This denial is in direct contradiction to what more than 100 humanitarian groups, witnesses on the ground, and multiple UN bodies have said.

  • Former Thai PM Thaksin Shinawatra acquitted in royal insult case | BBC News
A Bangkok court has acquitted billionaire and former Thai prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who was accused of insulting the monarchy.
The charge related to an interview he gave to a South Korean newspaper ten years ago. He would have faced up to 15 years in jail if convicted.
Thailand's lese majeste law forbids insulting its monarchy. But critics say it is often used to target activists and political opponents.

  • Where will Gaza City residents go after Israel's offensive begins? | BBC Newscast
Palestinians flee Gaza City districts as Israel says first stages of offensive have begun.
Hundreds of thousands of Palestinians are expected to be ordered to evacuate and head to southern Gaza. This escalation comes as Israel continues to restrict aid into the strip, with Palestinians facing widespread malnutrition. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said he is "shortening the timelines" for seizing what he described as "the last terror strongholds" in Gaza.
Israel has also given final approval for a settlement project which would cut off the West Bank from East Jerusalem and further splinter the Occupied Palestinian Territories. The Far-right Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich who unveiled the plans said the idea of a Palestinian state was "being erased".
Adam is joined in the studio with Panorama filmmaker Jane Corbin, who has reported extensively on the region, and Jo Floto, the BBC Middle East Bureau Chief.

  • Erik Menendez denied parole three decades after killing his parents in LA | BBC News
Erik Menendez was denied parole after making his bid for freedom before California's parole board.
The younger of the two notorious Menendez brothers, who were both convicted in the 1989 shotgun murders of their wealthy parents in Beverly Hills, made his first plea before the parole board on Thursday morning.
His brother, Lyle, is scheduled to face his own parole suitability hearing on Friday. Both brothers were made eligible for paroled release after they were resentenced by a judge in May.
Erik Menendez can try for parole again at another hearing in three years, the board ruled.
