  • Court rules asylum seekers must be moved from UK hotel | BBC News
Asylum seekers are due to be removed from a hotel in Essex, UK after Epping Forest District Council was granted a temporary High Court injunction blocking them from being housed there.
Thousands of people protested near the hotel in recent weeks after an asylum seeker from Ethiopia living there and was charged with sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl in the town.
All asylum seekers must be moved out of the hotel by 16:00 BST on 12 September, the judge ruled.
The Home Office had warned the decision would "substantially impact" its ability to house asylum seekers in hotels across the UK.
Protests staged outside The Bell Hotel have been attended by both people against its use for asylum seekers and those in support of migrant rights.
41-year-old Hadush Kebatu, from Ethiopia, was charged with sexual assault, harassment and inciting a girl to engage in sexual activity however, he denied the offences and remained in custody ahead of a two-day trial, due to begin next Tuesday.

For decades, coffee imports entered the US largely duty-free, but now some of America’s top trading partners are facing double digit tariffs on their imports, including coffee.
That’s true of Brazil, the largest supplier of coffee to the US, which faces a 50% tariff on its exports to America.
The tariffs are straining an industry which provides more than one million jobs in the US and is poised to strain prices too.

  • President Trump proposes Putin-Zelensky meeting after Oval Office talks | BBC Newscast
Straight off the back of the Alaska summit with Vladimir Putin, Donald Trump hosted Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House as he pushes for an end to the war in Ukraine.
The last time they met in the Oval Office, it ended in an argument in front of the world's media. It was a friendlier encounter this time, with Zelensky handing a letter to Donald Trump from his wife to the First Lady, Melania Trump.
It was soon followed by a meeting of major European leaders, all of whom travelled to Washington in solidarity with the Ukrainian president. Beyond the smiles and warm words, how much was actually agreed at today's meetings, and are we any closer to a trilateral summit between Russia, Ukraine and the U.S?

  • Ukraine’s Zelensky meets Trump at White House with support of European leaders | BBC News
Ukraine’s leader Volodymyr Zelensky has been holding talks with US President Donald Trump at the White House to discuss hopes of an end to the fighting in his country.
It follows last week’s summit between Donald Trump and Russia’s President Vladimir Putin in Alaska where they failed to agree a ceasefire.
President Zelensky was supported in his visit to Washington by European leaders, including the French and German Presidents and the British Prime Minister.
The meeting between President Trump and President Zelensky was cordial with none of the acrimony that accompanied their last meeting in the Oval Office earlier this year.
President Trump appeared to go further than previously in offering future security guarantees for Ukraine following a peace agreement. He said that Europe would be the "first line of defence" for Ukraine but promised that the US would be "involved” stating “we'll give them good protection”.
There was also discussion of a three-way meeting between Donald Trump, Volodymyr Zelensky and Vladimir Putin. The proposal has been advocated previously by the US and Ukrainian leaders but it has not been agreed to by Russia.

  • Hamas agrees to latest Gaza ceasefire proposal, source in group says | BBC News
Hamas has agreed to the latest proposal from regional mediators for a Gaza ceasefire and hostage release deal with Israel, a source in the Palestinian armed group has told the BBC.
According to a Palestinian official familiar with the talks, the proposal from Egypt and Qatar is a comprehensive two-stage plan based on a framework advanced by US envoy Steve Witkoff.
It would see Hamas free around half of the 50 remaining Israeli hostages - 20 of whom are believed to be alive - in two stages during a 60-day temporary truce.
During that time, there would be negotiations on a permanent ceasefire and an Israeli troop withdrawal.
There was no immediate comment from Israeli officials.

  • EU leaders prepare to join Trump and Zelensky for Ukraine talks | BBC News
US President Donald Trump said it is a "big day" at the White House ahead of a meeting with Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky and other key European leaders, about the war between Ukraine and Russia.
Meanwhile, Zelensky has accused Russia’s leader, Vladimir Putin, of wanting to "humiliate diplomatic efforts" after 10 people were killed in Russian strikes in the hours before the meeting.
Earlier, Trump ruled out Ukraine joining Nato and reclaiming Crimea, illegally annexed by Moscow in 2014, in a future peace deal to end the Russia-Ukraine war.

  • ‘I saw a kaleidoscopic light before going blind’, says Laos methanol poisoning survivor | BBC News
A group of bereaved family and friends in the UK are calling for more awareness about the dangers of methanol poisoning abroad.
Methanol can be found in spirits in tourist hotspots like Thailand, Indonesia or Laos.
However, it’s not always easy to tell whether the alcohol is bootleg, and the effects of these drinks can be life changing or even fatal.
23-year-old Calum Macdonald is now blind and told his story for the first time, as one of several victims of a mass methanol poisoning in Vang Vieng, Laos last November.

  • BBC films dozens of settlers attacking Palestinian community in West Bank | BBC News
BBC News has witnessed an attack by dozens of Israeli settlers on Palestinians living in the occupied West Bank. The settlers in the illegal outpost of Or Nahman attacked local Palestinian farmers, setting fire to vehicles and destroying their property.
The violence comes as the Israeli government plans to sign off the building of thousands of new homes elsewhere in the territory. That plan, which is illegal under international law, would “bury the idea of a Palestinian state” according to one far-right minister in the Israeli government.
Israeli settlers have been expanding their illegal seizures of Palestinian land since the start of the war in Gaza. Israel says that it does not support the creation of unauthorised new settlements. However many Palestinians accuse Israel’s government of complicity in the attacks and land seizures.
A BBC team was in the West Bank near the illegal outpost settlement of Or Nahman when Palestinian communities came under attack.

  • ‘Zelensky can end war with Russia immediately if he wants to’, says Trump | BBC News
US President Donald Trump has put pressure on Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky ahead of their meeting at the White House later today.
Posting on his Truth Social platform, Trump said "President Zelensky of Ukraine can end the war with Russia almost immediately, if he wants to, or he can continue to fight”.
However, he added that Ukraine would not be able to reclaim the Crimean peninsula, illegally annexed by Moscow in 2014.
Zelensky said he is "confident" about security guarantees for Ukraine, as he landed in Washington, alongside leaders from at least five European countries who will join him at the White House in a show of unity.
The war in Ukraine still rages on as Russian forces continue to move slowly forward in the east, while air strikes killed at least five people overnight
