  • Israelis protest against Gaza occupation plan as Palestinians flee IDF attacks | BBC News
A one-day nationwide strike is under way in Israel, as thousands protest the government's plan to seize Gaza City.
Major roads are blocked and train services have been disrupted, and in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, many businesses were shut.
The stoppage was demanded by the families of hostages and others who say the expansion of the war puts the lives of Israelis being held by Hamas at greater risk.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has criticised the protesters, saying they are “strengthening Hamas”.
It comes as thousands of residents flee Gaza City's southern Zeitoun neighbourhood, where days of continuous Israeli bombardment have created a "catastrophic" situation, according to the city's Hamas-run municipality.

Germany's Friedrich Merz, France's Emmanuel Macron and the European Commission's Ursula von der Leyen have all announced that they will be attending.
The meeting between Zelensky and Trump comes after talks between the US and Russian presidents failed to reach a deal on ending the Ukraine war.

  • Trump greets Putin with warm smiles and handshakes as they discuss peace in Ukraine | BBC News
The US and Russian Presidents Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin are holding face-to-face talks in Alaska to try to bring an end to the war in Ukraine.
The leaders arrived at Anchorage in Alaska, where President Trump clapped the Russian President's arrival before the two men greeted each other on a red carpet with warmth, broad smiles and handshakes. It’s the first time they’ve met face-to-face since 2019.
In the run-up to the talks President Trump said his aim was to see a ceasefire in Ukraine rapidly and that he wouldn’t be happy if one wasn’t agreed at the talks. It’s not clear if Russia’s President Putin is prepared to stop the fighting. Russian drones carried out more attacks on Ukraine, hours before the talks began.
One person who is not in Alaska is Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky, who wasn’t invited despite the fact that the talks are about the fate of his country, which Russia invaded three years ago.
Jane Hill presents BBC News at Ten reporting by Sarah Smith, Steve Rosenberg and Jonathan Beale.

  • UK government turns to TikTokers to advise on cosmetic surgery abroad | BBC News
The UK government is partnering with TikTok influencers to warn people about the risks of travelling abroad for cosmetic procedures.
There's growing concern over the rise in Britons seeking overseas treatments such as hair implants and dental work, often lured by lower costs and shorter waiting times.
Medical content creators will urge viewers to talk to a UK doctor first, take out travel insurance and avoid package holidays that include procedures.
The move is part of a wider government campaign to curb so-called medical tourism, as well as tighten regulations for cosmetic practitioners in England.
