  • Starvation warning in war-torn Sudan | BBC News
International aid organisations have intensified their warnings over starvation in Sudan.
Sudan was plunged into a civil war in April 2023 after a vicious power struggle erupted between the army and its former ally, the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) - creating one of the world's worst humanitarian crises.
The World Food Programme said it had not been able to deliver food to the city in the western Darfur region by road for more than a year.
The city of El-Fasher has been surrounded by paramilitary fighters from the RSF for nearly 16 months - determined to seize it from Sudan's army.
Local activists have already begun reporting deaths by starvation in the city, which is still home to about 300,000 people.

  • Israel blocking aid into Gaza, humanitarian agencies say | BBC News
More than 100 organisations have signed a joint letter calling on Israel to stop the "weaponisation of aid" into Gaza, as "starvation deepens".
Humanitarian groups, including Oxfam and Médecins Sans Frontières, say they are increasingly being told they are "not authorised" to deliver aid, unless they comply with the stricter Israeli regulations.
Groups risk being banned if they "delegitimise" the state of Israel or do not provide detailed information about Palestinian staff, the letter says.
Israel denies there are restrictions on aid and says the rules, introduced in March, ensure that aid "reaches the population directly and not Hamas".

  • Survival rates for most deadly cancers making little progress, experts warn | BBC News
The number of people surviving cancer has improved hugely in the past 50 years - but experts warn progress has been uneven, with some cancers with the worst survival rates falling further behind.
For some, including melanoma skin cancer, 10-year survival is now above 90% in England and Wales, while for all cancers half of patients can expect to live that long.
But a London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine study said there had been little improvement in those affecting the oesophagus, stomach and lungs - and less than 5% survive pancreatic cancer for 10 years.

  • Israel bombards Gaza City ahead of take over | BBC News
Gaza City has come under intense air attack, the territory's Hamas-run civil defence agency spokesman has said, as Israeli forces prepare to launch an operation to take over the city.
Mahmud Bassal said the residential areas of Zeitoun and Sabra had been hit for three days causing "massive destruction to civilian homes", with residents unable to recover the dead and injured.
Meanwhile the UK, EU, Australia, Canada and Japan issued a statement saying "famine is unfolding in front of our eyes" and urged action to "reverse starvation".
Israel denies there is starvation in Gaza and has accused UN agencies of not picking up aid at the borders and delivering it.

  • Trump to hold call with Zelensky and European leaders ahead of Putin summit | BBC News
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will join virtual talks with European leaders and Donald Trump, ahead of the US president's meeting with Russia's Vladimir Putin in Alaska.
In an online call with Trump on Wednesday, the leaders are expected to reiterate that no decisions should be taken without Ukraine, including changing its borders by force.
Trump has said any peace deal would involve "some swapping of territories" and it is believed one of Vladimir Putin's demands is that Kyiv surrenders the parts of the eastern Donbas area it still controls.

  • Protests over Israel's killing of journalists in Gaza | BBC News
There have been protests across Europe and the US over Israel's killing of journalists in Gaza on Monday.
The UN's human rights office has condemned the attack, calling it a grave breach of international law.
Five Al Jazeera journalists, including correspondent Anas al-Sharif, were killed in an Israeli air strike on Sunday. Two others were killed, including a freelance journalist, the broadcaster said.
Israel's military said it targeted Sharif, alleging he had "served as the head of a terrorist cell in Hamas" - something Sharif denied. Israel provided little evidence for this claim and has said nothing about the other journalists it killed.
