  • Five Al Jazeera journalists killed in Israeli strike in Gaza | BBC News
Five Al Jazeera journalists have been killed in an Israeli strike near Gaza City's Al-Shifa Hospital, the broadcaster has said.
Correspondents Anas al-Sharif and Mohammed Qreiqeh, alongside cameramen Ibrahim Zaher, Mohammed Noufal and Moamen Aliwa were in a tent for journalists at the hospital's main gate when it was struck, Al Jazeera reported.
In total, seven people died in the strike, it added.
The "targeted assassination" on Sunday was "yet another blatant and premeditated attack on press freedom", it said in a statement.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed that it had targeted Anas al-Sharif, writing in a Telegram post that he had "served as the head of a terrorist cell in Hamas".
The IDF did not mention any of the other journalists who were killed.

  • Israeli settlers intensify violent campaign to drive out West Bank Palestinians | BBC News
Since the October 7th attacks by Hamas, Israeli pressure on Palestinian civilians in the occupied West Bank has risen sharply. Settler attacks on Palestinian communities have increased and Israeli military raids have displaced thousands of people. The Israeli government justifies what is taking place as legitimate security measures to counter what it describes as Palestinian terrorism.
There’s also been an acceleration in the building of Israeli settlements in the West Bank, which are illegal under international law. Evidence based on statements by Israeli ministers and influential settler leaders suggest a deliberate agenda, to expand Jewish settlements in the occupied territories and extinguish lingering hopes of an independent Palestinian state alongside Israel.
Palestinians and human rights groups accuse the Israeli security forces of failing in their legal duty as occupiers to protect Palestinians as well as their own citizens - not just turning a blind eye to settler attacks, but even joining in.
The International Court of Justice has issued an advisory opinion that the entire occupation of Palestinian territory captured in 1967 is illegal. Israel's rejects the ICJ's view and claims that the Geneva Conventions forbidding settlement in occupied territories do not apply. That’s disputed by many of its own allies as well as international lawyers.

The UN Security Council also held an emergency meeting in New York on Sunday with Miroslav Jenča, the assistant secretary general for Europe, Central Asia and Americas, saying the Gaza City plan is "another dangerous escalation of the conflict".
Israeli leaders have rejected criticism of its plan, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu saying "this will help free" the remaining Israeli hostages in Gaza.

  • Ukraine's European allies say Kyiv must be in peace talks as US and Russia hold meeting | BBC News
European allies have rallied behind Ukraine in a renewed surge of support, insisting that any peace talks with Russia must include Kyiv.
A joint statement issued by the leaders of the UK, France, Italy, Germany, Poland, Finland and the European Commission came ahead of US President Donald Trump's meeting with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin in Alaska on Friday.
A White House official has said that Trump is willing to hold a trilateral meeting which would also include Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, but, for now, it remains a Trump-Putin summit, as initially requested by the Russian leader.
Zelensky has said any agreements without Kyiv will amount to "dead decisions".

  • Ceremony held in Nagasaki to mark 80th anniversary of atomic bombing | BBC News
The mayor of Nagasaki has appealed for an end to the wars raging in the world on the 80th anniversary of the US atom bomb attack which destroyed the Japanese city.
"Conflicts around the world are intensifying in a vicious cycle of confrontation and fragmentation," Shiro Suzuki said in a Peace Declaration at a solemn ceremony to mark the event.
"If we continue on this trajectory, we will end up thrusting ourselves into a nuclear war."
The attack on 9 August 1945, which analysts say hastened the end of World War Two, killed an estimated 74,000 people.
In the years that followed many survivors suffered from leukaemia or other severe side effects of radiation.
Saturday's ceremony came a few days after the commemoration of the first atomic bombing, which targeted the Japanese city of Hiroshima 80 years ago on 6 August, killing an estimated 140,000 people.

  • World leaders condemn Israel's plan for Gaza City takeover | BBC News
International opposition has continued against Israel's decision to takeover Gaza City.
UN human rights chief Volker Turk warned that further escalation would "result in more massive forced displacement, more killing, more unbearable suffering, senseless destruction and atrocity crimes".
Israel has strongly rejected criticism from world leaders after its security cabinet approved a plan to take control of Gaza City.
Defence Minister Israel Katz said countries that condemned Israel and threatened sanctions would "not weaken our resolve".
The IDF currently controls about three-quarters of Gaza, and almost all of its 2.1 million citizens are situated in the quarter of the territory that the military does not control.
The UN estimates some 87% of Gaza is either in militarised zones or under evacuation orders.
