  • Uber launches UK's first robotaxis in London | BBC News
Londoners are able to hail the UK's first robotaxis - as Uber today becomes the first company to launch a self-driving minicab.
Initially, it only has 15 autonomous vehicles with a licence to operate in the city, and each one must have a human safety driver behind the wheel ready to take control if anything goes wrong.
Uber said it surveyed London-based customers via the app and more than 100,000 said they would choose a self-driving taxi if one was available, despite incidents of driverless rides malfunctioning in US cities where they already operate.

The number of crossings is currently at a six-year-low and UK ministers have credited the French police for intercepting more attempts.
The BBC’s Paris Correspondent James Waterhouse has looked at how the people smugglers are being forced to adapt.

  • Is the world giving up on the US dollar? | The Global Story
America’s national debt recently hit a new milestone of $40 trillion. It is estimated that interest payments on the national debt are now the second largest expense in the US government budget, trailing only Social Security. How was the US able to borrow so much and for so long? One answer, according Harvard economist Kenneth Rogoff, is the US dollar’s status as the world’s reserve currency.
In this episode, Rogoff - former Chief Economist at the International Monetary Fund - explains how the US dollar came to enjoy this hegemonic status, what being the world’s reserve currency actually means in practice, and why he believes the dollar is now in decline.
