    In a statement on Instagram, Messi said he has given everything to the national side but now has "nothing left to give".

  • US and Iran trade strikes for first time in weeks | BBC News
    Iran and the US have traded strikes after American forces attacked two rocket launchers on Larak Island in the Strait of Hormuz.
    The first known US strikes on Iran since late July killed two people and injured two others, according to Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, which vowed "response and punishment".
    US Central Command said it had taken "limited, precise action" against "minelaying forces posing an imminent threat in the Strait of Hormuz".

  • More than 900 people killed in Nepal-Tibet flood | BBC News
    The number of people missing in Nepal after the massive flash flood on Wednesday has risen to 4,247- with at least 903 people known to have died.
    The number of missing is a sharp rise from 2,502, which was announced on Sunday. Of those missing, 3,655 are Nepali citizens, with 592 foreigners unaccounted for.
    In Tibet, the official death toll is 16, with 546 reported missing, according to Chinese state media.

  • Seven killed and 23 missing after boat capsizes off northern Cyprus | BBC News
    Seven people have died after a passenger boat capsized near northern Cyprus.
    Search and rescue operations are under way to find 23 people missing, said Ünal Üstel, prime minister of the self-declared Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.
    He says 267 people were on board the vessel when it capsized, and 237 have been rescued.
    The boat left from the northern Cypriot port of Kyrenia at 11:58 local time (09:58 BST) and officials said it capsized around four nautical miles into its journey to Turkey.

    Prime Minister Andy Burnham has told the BBC that PC Andrew Harper's killers will remain behind bars as he announces changes to the early release scheme aimed at easing prison overcrowding. 
    In an exclusive interview with BBC Breakfast, Burnham said anyone convicted of manslaughter will be excluded from changes brought in under the Sentencing Act, which would have made the killers eligible for early release. 
    Burnham said extra prison spaces would be created by deporting "hundreds" of foreign prisoners and releasing some inmates serving indefinite sentences.

  • At least 37 dead in huge blast as arms depot hit by Russian drone in Ukraine | BBC News
    37 people have been killed after a huge explosion at an arms depot in Ukraine which was struck by a Russian drone. The ams storage facility was based near a residential areas on the outskirts of the capital, Kyiv. Hundreds of people have been evacuated from the area and a rescue operation is continuing, with fears that the death toll will rise.
    Shells, mines and drones stored at the facility exploded in a massive blast that destroyed nearby homes nearby, including a care home for the elderly and disabled.
    Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky strongly criticised the location of the depot near people’s homes, saying an investigation had been launched into "terrible negligence on the part of those who stored explosive right next to people".
    Russia's Ministry of Defence said that its forces had targeted "an ammunition depot”.
