  • Trump's secret flight and the Iran security threat | Global News Podcast
President Donald Trump has admitted that he took a secret flight out of Turkey last month, in response to a possible Iranian threat.
US media reported that Mr Trump left Air Force One on the tarmac and hid in a catering truck before boarding another plane, following a Nato summit in Ankara.
Air Force One then took off as a "decoy", in the words of some analysts, carrying several journalists and high-ranking US officials, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio and advisor Stephen Miller.
We speak to the BBC's White House reporter Bernd Debusmann, in Washington, about the ruse to get President Trump off Air Force One, and the threats to his life, posed by Iran.
Earlier this year a man working for Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) was convicted of murder for hire and attempt to commit an act of terrorism for his role in a 2024 assassination plot. President Trump has also faced homegrown threats. A bullet struck his ear when a gunman opened fire at a 2024 campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. And an armed man attempted to storm the White House Correspondents' Dinner this year.

  • Is Trump trying to influence foreign elections? | BBC News
The Trump administration is embroiled in a diplomatic standoff after Brazilian President Lula da Silva accused the US of sending officials to “meddle in Brazil’s elections”, an allegation the US called, "baseless".
Throughout its history, the US has been accused of trying to influence political events outside its borders – from offering subtle incentives for its preferred political outcome to secretly sponsoring coups against foreign governments.
In recent years, President Trump has pursued a more overt strategy, publicly endorsing candidates who align with his politics. So are we seeing a new blueprint for US foreign policy?
We speak to BBC Brazil correspondent Leandro Prazeres about the US-Brazil fallout.
We also hear from Politico correspondent Nahal Toosi about the long history of US interference in foreign elections, and how the Trump administration compares.

  • Israeli settlers trap two Palestinian families in West Bank | BBC News
Israeli settlers have been besieging two Palestinian families in their homes in the occupied West Bank since Sunday. The families have said their supplies were running out, while rights groups have urged the authorities to step in.
Israeli security forces have reportedly withdrawn from the Jewish settler outpost in the village of Qusra near Nablus, following clashes with a crowd of extremist settlers. About a dozen settlers are said to remain at the site.
After the Palestinian homeowners made their initial report to the Israeli army, the first soldiers who arrived at the scene were filmed praying with the settlers.
The latest developments come as a top UN official told the Security Council that "the West Bank is at breaking point".

  • What Colombia's earthquake means for its fight against rebels and gangs | Global News Podcast
Rescue workers in Colombia are still searching for survivors after one of the worst earthquakes to hit the country in years. More than 200 people are confirmed dead, and hundreds more are injured.
One of the worst-affected cities is Cali which, just last week, hosted the inauguration of newly-elected President Abelardo de la Espriella.
A right-wing populist who was endorsed by US President Donald Trump, Mr de la Espriella has promised to crack down on the drug gangs and armed rebel groups - including the National Liberation Army (ELN) and dissident factions of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (Farc). It appears those priorities will now be delayed while the new government responds to the earthquake.
We speak to BBC Mundo's William Marquez, who is Colombian, about the scale of the devastation, and how the country's ongoing issues with violence could complicate the disaster response.
