  • Why are AI agents hacking other companies and have they gone rogue? | BBC Newscast
Today, are some of the world’s leading AI companies doing enough to stop their models from going rogue?
Facebook owner Meta has become the latest tech firm to say one of its AI models hacked another company. Similar breaches by OpenAI and Anthropic models have raised cyber-security concerns and prompted calls for tougher safeguards and more rigorous testing. Adam discusses with Professor Gina Neff, Head of the Minderoo Centre for Technology and Democracy at the University of Cambridge and Ciaran Martin - Former CEO of The National Security Centre.
And the majority of England’s rivers and lakes have failed a new environmental review. • Why Israeli troops in Lebanon are not withdrawing | Global News Podcast
Israel and Lebanon have concluded a seventh round of peace talks - brokered by the US and held in Rome - without achieving a significant breakthrough.
Central to the talks is a plan for the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) to withdraw from certain parts of southern Lebanon, where they have been fighting the militant group Hezbollah. Lebanese government troops would then take over security duties there.
But, as we hear from BBC Arabic's Carine Torbey in Beirut, the early attempts to implement this "pilot zone" plan have hit some roadblocks. And Israel has continued to launch strikes on southern Lebanon in recent days.
A lasting ceasefire in Lebanon is considered crucial to achieving peace in the Middle East. Iran has stated that any deal it agrees with the US and Israel must also include Lebanon.
Israel's continued military campaign there has reportedly led to friction between President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

  • Will Hamas actually disarm? | The Global Story
It has been a week since President Trump announced that the Board of Peace had reached an "historic agreement” in Gaza for the “complete disarmament” of Hamas.
But in the days since, the situation has become more uncertain. Hamas has said that it will only disarm when Israel withdraws its forces from Gaza, but Israeli officials insist they will not withdraw until the weapons are handed over.
On Tuesday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel had not agreed to the plan.
To explain what comes next, we turn to the BBC’s international editor, Jeremy Bowen.

  • Ukraine strikes two Russian oil refineries | BBC News
Officials in Russia and Ukraine have both reported deaths and injuries following attacks.
Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky said the country's military had hit two Russian oil refineries in "long-range" attacks.
Russia’s Yaroslav region has counted four injured in an attack on the Slavneft-Yanos oil refinery after huge clouds of smoke were seen over the city.
Russia's regional governor in Yaroslavl called it the "largest ever attack by enemy drones", saying 93 drones had been destroyed, but oil storage tanks had been hit by falling debris.
Across Russia, the military said it had intercepted and destroyed 605 Ukrainian drones in multiple regions, including Yaroslavl.
In Ukraine, officials said three people had been killed in a Russian drone attack on a residential area.

  • Women tell BBC of rape and abuse at Army teen college | BBC News
Four young women have told the BBC they were sexually assaulted and harassed at an army training college for teenagers - with one saying she was raped by several fellow junior soldiers in an attack that lasted hours.
The women all attended the Army Foundation College (AFC) at Harrogate, North Yorkshire, over the past five years and say the incidents happened when they were aged 17.
The BBC can also reveal that North Yorkshire Police received 16 reports of sexual offences linked to the college in the year to June, according to a Freedom of Information request.
Those reported offences include allegations of exposure, voyeurism and sexual assault. No information was provided as to whether they had led to prosecutions.
"Unacceptable and criminal behaviour has absolutely no place in our Armed Forces," said the Army spokesperson.
"People join in the hope of having a fantastic career and any such reports are unacceptable and go completely against everything the Army stands for."
AFC is the largest military training establishment for under-19s in the UK and it receives all the Army's 16-year-old recruits. There are currently 70 female junior soldiers at the Harrogate site of a total of 889.
