  • Fires rage in France and Spain as heatwave returns | BBC News
France and Spain continue to battle wildfires, as temperatures are expected to soar past 40C in some regions in the coming days.
Spain's national weather service says the severe weather is forecast to last until "at least" Sunday, and warns of "extreme" fire risks as firefighters continue to battle the some of the worst blazes in the country's history.
France's south-west regions Gironde and Landes are under "yellow alert" for a heatwave expected to peak on Wednesday, further hampering efforts to contain "very unpredictable" blazes in Gironde.
The mayor of Bordeaux has said he is preparing for "all eventualities", as one of the wildfires burning in France is 15km (nine miles) from the south-western city.

  • Police fight gangs, guns and corruption in Ecuador’s war on drugs | BBC News
There is a state of emergency in Ecuador - the latest in a series - as the country battles local drug gangs with links to international cartels. Once one of South America’s most peaceful corners, Ecuador now has a murder rate that is one of the highest in the world.
The country has become the gateway for about 70% of the cocaine reaching the US and Europe – including the UK. The drug floods in from neighbouring Colombia and Peru, the two biggest cocaine producers in the world.
The BBC’s Orla Guerin has been at the heart of the war on drugs in Duran, one of the most gang-controlled cities in Ecuador.

  • Thousands of mosquitos being released in Washington DC | BBC News
About 600,000 mosquitoes are being released across the Washington DC area this summer to help reduce local mosquito populations.
Only male mosquitoes – infected with the naturally occurring bacteria Wolbachia – are released. They don't bite humans, and the bacteria they carry prevents any eggs produced after mating from hatching.
The release of mosquitos comes as climate change creates more favourable conditions for the insects to survive and reproduce, increasing concerns about the spread of mosquito-borne diseases.

  • Europe wildfires: France warns of worst crisis "since WW2” as new heatwave looms | BBC News
More than 360,000 people have been evacuated across France and Spain as unprecedented wildfires continue to spread.
The French President Emmanuel Macron held crisis talks and said his country was facing its most difficult situation since the Second World War.
Firefighters are still struggling to control the fires, as a new heatwave is forecast to bring further hot, dry conditions that could help fuel the blaze.
The authorities are warning that a major fire which is now just 9 miles from Bordeaux could continue to burn for months.
In Spain, more than 60,000 people have been forced to flee their homes near the capital Madrid.
Fiona Bruce presents BBC News at Ten reporting by Gwyn Loader, Justin Rowlatt and Mark Lowen.

  • US and Iran pause strikes for third night to make space for talks, US ambassador says | BBC News
President Donald Trump has paused attacks on Iran for the third night in a row to give diplomacy more time, the US ambassador to the UN said.
An Iranian army spokesperson said on Sunday that Tehran had halted "retaliatory" attacks in the region in response. The pause follows nearly two weeks of daily US strikes and tit-for-tat attacks, effectively unravelling the ceasefire struck in June.
Meanwhile, Iran and Oman held several rounds of technical talks in Tehran on Friday and Saturday to discuss management of the Strait of Hormuz, according to Iranian foreign ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei.
Elsewhere, Ukraine has dismissed Iranian threats of retaliation, following Kyiv's targeting of an Iranian cargo vessel in the Caspian Sea on Saturday.

  • Europe's wildfire crisis | Global News Podcast
We speak to the BBC's climate editor Justin Rowlatt about the wildfires raging across Europe, and ask him how to prevent these blazes from becoming the new normal.
More than 300,000 people in France and Spain have fled their homes as the fires continue. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has said the climate emergency is to blame for the fires, and warned that "difficult hours lie ahead" as his country braces for another heatwave. One official said Spain is facing a "national wildfire crisis".
French President Emmanuel Macron has held a crisis meeting in Paris to discuss the government's response as wildfires burn near the city of Bordeaux. The flames there are so intense that they have created their own thunderstorms in the form of pyrocumulonimbus clouds.
