  • Are FIFA allowing President Trump to interfere in the World Cup? | BBC Newscast
Did President Trump step in to make sure the USA’s star striker could play in tonight’s world cup game?
Folarin Balogun, was sent off in the last game and should have served a suspension for the last-16 match against Belgium. But World Cup organisers Fifa, opted not to enforce an immediate sanction on the 25-year-old, meaning the co-hosts' leading goalscorer will be available to play.
The BBC's US media partner CBS News has confirmed that Balogun's reinstatement came after US president Donald Trump called Fifa president Gianni Infantino on Thursday and spoke about the suspension. Adam discusses with BBC News chief presenter, Caitríona Perry and Dale Johnson, football issues correspondent.
Plus, Buckingham Palace says Prince Harry will not be staying at the palace during his visit to London this week, despite his team announcing this morning that he had accepted an invitation to do so. Why? Adam speaks to senior royal correspondent Daniela Relph.

  • Ukraine running out of air defences, as Russia bombards Kyiv | Global News Podcast
Rescuers are searching for bodies in the rubble of residential blocks in Kyiv, after the latest Russian bombardment of the Ukrainian capital.
Ukraine's air force said Russia knew Kyiv had all but run out of interceptor rockets, so it was attacking with ballistic missiles. None of the 23 used in the latest attack was shot down.
A frustrated President Zelensky urged Ukraine's NATO allies to take "strong decisions" at their summit on Tuesday to provide it with air defences, posting that "as long as missiles for Patriots remain in the warehouses of allies, it only encourages Russia to continue defeating residential buildings. The United States and Europe have enough power to stop this terror".

  • Is Putin on the back foot in Ukraine and in Russia? | The Global Story
US President Donald Trump will be attending a NATO summit in Turkey this week, where he’s likely to hear one consistent message from European leaders: the tide is shifting against Russia in its war with Ukraine. And not just on the battlefield.
Russian cities are being pounded by Ukrainian drones in ever increasing numbers. Fuel shortages have become widespread as key infrastructure has been targeted, with long lines seen at gas stations and trucks abandoned by the side of the road.
Vladimir Putin recently made a rare admission; that his country is actually facing problems caused by the conflict, amid growing disquiet about Russia’s enormous economic problems.
In today’s episode The Global Story's Asma Khalid speaks to Simon Shuster, staff writer at The Atlantic, and veteran reporter of Russia and Ukraine. With the war starting to hit home, we ask if Putin is now on the back foot?

  • Ukraine warns of interceptor missile shortage as at least 22 killed in Kyiv region | BBC News
At least 15 people were killed in the second large-scale Russian attack on the Ukrainian capital in a week, officials have said.
Seven more were killed in the wider Kyiv region.
The Ukrainian Air Force says a "serious shortage" of interceptor missiles meant none of the 23 ballistic missiles fired by Russia at Kyiv on Sunday night were shot down.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian strikes on Russian-annexed Crimea have increased significantly in recent weeks - partly to cut off supply lines to Russian troops attacking Ukraine from the south.

  • US player reinstated for World Cup after Trump calls Fifa | BBC News
Folarin Balogun is available to play for the United States in their World Cup last-16 tie against Belgium after his one-game ban was suspended by Fifa.
The 25-year-old striker was shown a straight red card for a foul on a Bosnia-Herzegovina player as the co-hosts won their last-32 match 2-0.
Fifa said the automatic one-match ban would be suspended for a year. No reasoning behind the move was provided, beyond citing a rule which allows punishments to be suspended.
AFP and Reuters are reporting that Trump called Fifa president Gianni Infantino earlier this week to ask for the red card to be reviewed. The BBC has not yet confirmed these reports.
