  • Why the Flydubai attack could upend Israeli elections | BBC News
How did the passengers of Flydubai's flight FZ1073 prevent a catastrophe after a cockpit attack? And what does this incident mean for Israel at a politically charged moment?
On Wednesday, a flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv was diverted to Saudi Arabia after one pilot allegedly stabbed the other. The aircraft entered a 17,000ft plunge before passengers and crew forced their way into the cockpit, overpowered the alleged attacker and helped bring the plane back under control. The injured pilot, identified as Indian national Capt Smit Machchhar, was taken to hospital after the flight landed and later called a "hero" by the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Now, Israeli officials are investigating whether the stabbing was an act of terrorism – and whether any warning signs were missed.
On The Global Story, Tristan Redman speaks to BBC Middle East correspondent Yolande Knell, who explains what we know so far about the Flydubai flight and the significance of a suspected security incident so close to pivotal elections in Israel.

  • AI boom could trigger market shocks, Bank of England boss warns | BBC News
Artificial intelligence (AI) could trigger financial market shocks and the UK needs to be prepared for them, the governor of the Bank of England has warned.
Andrew Bailey said the central bank is watching the huge amounts of money being invested in AI "very carefully" and cautioned that "not everybody always wins".
The money that has been spent on and loaned to AI firms over the last few years in the hope of large returns is causing markets to value some of them as multi-trillion dollar businesses.

  • Israel flight attack: dramatic video of passengers tackling pilot “trying to crash plane” | BBC News
Dramatic images filmed on board a passenger plane flying from UAE to Israel capture the moments when passengers stormed the cockpit after one pilot stabbed the other in an apparent mid-air hijack attempt.
Distress signals from the plane triggered a major security alert, with Israel scrambling fighter jets to intercept the aircraft.
The plane, flying from Dubai to Israel, plunged around 15,000 feet, as flight control was lost. Passengers described how one of the Flydubai pilots had stabbed his co-pilot and appeared to be intending to crash the plane.
Passengers managed to break into the cockpit with one of the crew members and subdued the attacker.
Other pilots on board then took control of the flight which made an emergency landing in Saudi Arabia where a pilot was arrested.
Israel's prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu described the pilot who was stabbed as a hero. The defence minister said it was an act of "jihadist terrorism".
Clive Myrie presents BBC News at Ten reporting by Yogita Limaye in Tel Aviv.
