Episode 21, The Evolution of the Church and Christian Values: Televangelism – The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly Part 1 concentrates on the rise of Televangelism and its profound effect on the local church. We introduce you to several popular Televangelists, their methods of operation, and their basic messages. We leave the good, bad, and ugly determination to you, the audience. Next week, in Part 2, we'll conclude our discussion, and suggest ways that Television Churches have their proper place, and how it is not healthy for today's Christian to supplant their involvement in the local church with an hour in the easy chair listening to the pastor of a TV Church. Episode 19 of B.Boomer Unleashed, The Evolution of the Church: Enter the Mega Church of the 1970s Part 2 picks up the discussion where we left off last week in Episode 18. We discuss the second ingredient to perceived success of the Mega Church and determine whether that ingredient was long-lasting, or a passing trend. In Episode 20, we will try to add the final four ingredients in preparation of ushering in the Television Church and its effect on local ministry. In future episodes we will discuss how far we've departed from the core values of our parents, and exactly where our revised core values have taken us today. We are also making arrangements in the near future to interview one of my good friends, former Cabell County Schools Superintendent, Bill Smith. Bill and I will be discussing just what it was like to grow up Black in the 50s and 60s, Civil Rights issues, and whether life is better now than it was in Boomer Days. Episode 18 of B.Boomer Unleashed, The Evolution of the Church: Enter the Mega Church of the 1970s Part 1 discusses the entry of the Protestant Mega Church. For the purpose of discussion, we define Mega Church as any Protestant Church with a membership of 2,000 or more. We discuss how we have gone from less than a dozen Mega Churches in the early 70s to nearly 750 today. We lay the background and provide the early history of development in these churches with particular emphasis on early Baptist Mega Churches. We discuss the first ingredient in the recipe for success in the early Mega Church, and how the Baby Boomers played an important role in this phenomenon. In follow-up episodes, we will move through the remaining ingredients for success, and expand our discussion to Televangelists, Mega Money Churches, and how far we've departed from the Local Community Church that we knew growing up in the 50s and 60s. We'll also discuss how one of the pioneer Televangelists, Bishop Pike, may have been the catalyst that propelled mainline Protestant Churches to capitalize on the groundwork he laid in the early days of religious broadcasting. Each remaining episode in this series builds on information provided in the preceding episodes. Episode 17 - The Evolution of the Church: How the Sexual Revolution Changed Churches Forever, is a discussion about the profound effect the Sexual Revolution of the 1960s had on the Christian Church. In the following episode, we will discuss the entrance of the Mega Church and how it has changed the perception of Christianity. Episode 16: The Evolution of the Church: Going to Church in the 50s takes an in depth look at what going to church was like in the 1950s. We begin with a very brief look at the First Century Church and then fast-forward to 1950. This was an era of Community Churches and family involvement. Each episode in this series establishes the groundwork for the next. In next week's episode, The Evolution of the Church: How the Sexual Revolution Changed Churches Forever, we look at a decade when many churches and pastors buried their heads in the sand as the Sexual Revolution of the 60s attacked the church from within.
