  • What Do You Do When You Need To Find a New School For Your Child? | Ep #16

Mary walks parents through what exercises are helpful in learning what might be a best-fit school for their child. She dives into how parents can observe and record anecdotes in various areas of their child's development (this includes language, motor, social-emotional and academic experience) and then comment on their child's strengths, talents, and challenges. By delving into the child's learning experience, parents can note the pace, rigor, and support their child needs to learn at their best. Mary ends by stressing the importance of realizing how this is all just part of the whole exploration process. Evolved Education is here to help! • Back to School with High School Students: An Interview with Dr. Ariel Kornblum | Ep #15

Back to school in Fall 2021 is an unprecedented time for high school students. Join Dr. Kronblum and Mary Miele to discover ways you can support your student during their transition from summer to school. Dr. Kornblum received her undergraduate degree in Psychology from The George Washington University, and completed her graduate degree at St. John's University. Dr. Kornblum is the Clinical Director of Behavioral and Educational Services at MPG, as well as a child/adolescent psychologist and a former Assistant Director at Big Apple Day Program.

Mary and Dr. Kornblum go into greater detail about what parents anticipate for this fall and how we can best support our high school students. By acknowledging that none of us have ever experienced what they are experiencing with the start of this 2021-2022 school year, we give our kids a lot of grace. Mary and Dr. Kornblum talk about validating those feelings they may have of nervousness and fatigue and anxiety and the patience it will require. As parents, Mary and Dr. Kornblum talk about managing expectations, keeping lines of communication very open with your kid, and staying vulnerable with them.

  • Interview with Margaret Davis | Ep #13

In this episode Mary and Margaret focus on strategies for parents of middle school children, and how best to support our kids in their efforts to adjust back to school this fall of 2021.

Last year, kids were in school in lots of different ways because of the pandemic, so Mary and Margaret talk about how we can support our students through another confusing new time.

We need to be patient with our kids, setting them up with different routines to help them be successful. Margaret goes on to discuss the "wins" students gained from last year through COVID: adapting to a lot of change, learning to be more independent, etc. and how by focusing on our students' strengths we set them up for success back at school.

Mary ends by emphasizing the importance of advocating for our kids and partnering with our teachers.

  • Executive Functioning Series - Long-Term Planning | Ep #10

Mary delves into how parents can be exemplifiers of long-term planning for their students. By listing out everything that needs to be done and demonstrating the benefits of working over a longer period of time, parents help their students build a schema for long-term planning.

She uses an example of a teacher assigning a diorama to delve into the ways we can assist our students in creating a roadmap towards completion. By creating a routine around planning work, we can teach our students that by working over a longer period of time, we get to be more creative, ask more questions, and take pride in your work.

  • Executive Functioning Series - How to Help Your Child to Study | Ep #9

The word "study" is a very broad and vague word that means many different things. It can mean learning or understanding something, mastering something, contextualizing, etc. When we ask our kids to study, they need to know what we want them to be doing.

Mary talks about how students can create their roadmap for studying, asking themselves questions like "How does my brain learn best?" and "What is my learning ability like?" We want to enjoy the process of studying and not create an experience around it that is one of frustration.

  • Interview with Tatum DeMann | Ep #8

Mary and Tatum started working together when Tatum was in 2nd grade. Tatum was a driven learner and put a lot of pressure on herself. She was a perfectionist when it came to her education, and she set herself to such a high standard it was debilitating.

Mary talks about how you can master things without getting frustrated. She reflects that on working with Tatum she saw that when Tatum moved from one problem she knew to one she didn't know, Tatum would have a meltdown. Mary thought "great you care so much about this work." Her response was let's just take a deep breath and dig into the difficult.

Everyone has some area of challenge, let's get it to work for you. Tatum realizes how much she continues to use the techniques Mary taught her. She didn't get any math questions wrong on the SAT because she refused to not understand every question on the PSAT.

If Tatum could go back and talk to that young girl that Mary worked with she'd say: the challenges that seem so overwhelming right now - that's what's going to drive you to be the most successful version of yourself. The people around you are there to help you grow and learn. And if you're nervous, take that as a positive that you care.

  • Talking with Spencer Moravek About Student Anxiety and Stress (and Boredom) | Ep #7

Spencer Moravek, an Evolved Education tutor, talks about student anxiety.

He defines anxiety as an energy source. Anxiety burns "hot." He is curious about the types of energy that students use. Boredom is another energy that students use. He asks, "why is it that it is often overlooked- unlike the energy of anxiety, which is often used and feared."

When students display boredom, we can keep going until we find what is exciting and interesting.

PLEASE NOTE: Dorthea Fox is actually Nancy Hart.

By using boredom to investigate interest, our classes and learning can become enriched and much more valuable. Spencer has helped many students to use anxiety to become a better student and learner. He talks about how to use that energy to support students. In one instance, he partners with teachers to change up an assignment in order to meet the interests of the student. In another, he builds in a reward system to get through the work he does not wish to do. Spencer also speaks about a study he was involved in while at the Brain and Language Lab at DePaul University.
